Default Old Spalted Hard Maple

I was at a customers house yesterday, and the conversation lead to ww and she informs me that they had a hard maple fall two years ago. She had the log sawed to mostly 8/4 and Kiln dried, with plans of having a dining room taple made from it. That never happened. It's still sitting in a covered shed. About 1600bf

I think she wants to sell it, now i have how worked out a deal for 1/2 of it, but thought I would share with you guys about the other half. The intire log is spalted, most planks are about 6-8 wide, some are 14-16 wide. I did not measure the lengh, but I's guess it to be 8-12 ft. It came off the property of the FIRST house ever built on the Indiana side of the river from Louisville. PRE- Civil War. She guess's over 150+ plus.

I'll plane down a piece and post it for you guys to see.........
What it's worth per board ft? Are the extra wide peices worth more than the standard bf $$ b/c of it's size?
Is anyone interested in some of it???

Yea do that...the history and all is cool, but alot of trees are 150 (or 500) years old. Pics with tell its worth. Hope you did not get her all excited about $. $4 bft would be average...unless it was "too spalted" (rotten), improperly dried, not spalted enough...then you have not much of anything. Not being rude, just speaking from experience.

Like Daren said, spalted lumber price is all about the look. I've had some that sold for anywhere from $3 up to $7, depending on the quality. Advanced spalt has an effect on the fiber strength of the wood and can be too tough to work with. Early spalt has nice thin pencil lines and the wood strength is still strong. Definetely some pics would be cool!

Well i planed a piece of the lumber down and I can't find my camera

But there apears to be what i would call worm holes?????? small black spots through out the peice.

Now it all doesn't have this, but some does.

Anyone care to tell me what it is?

Again...a picture would help. It could be a good thing, ambrosia beetle with associated cool colors, most often sold as a premium. Or it could be a very bad thing, powder post beetles that just eat and ruin wood (and can migrate from this wood to other wood in the shop and ruin it too).

Ok, I found the lost camera and wiped the board down with mineral spirits to help darken it for the pic.

I don't see any spalting in this piece, but the black spots and "worm hoels are all over it" any input would be great!!!

Sorry, I kinda forgot about this thread. Yea, that looks like "ambrosia maple" to me. Google image search and compare and see what you think. http://images.google.com/images?hl=e...h+Images&gbv=2

I wish I could be more help with a $ figure. I don't deal it that kind of stock. Your question about wide boards being worth more, as a general rule yes.

Thanks for the help Daren.......

Do you think a Butchers block would be ok with the holes in it, or should I stay away?

I personally would stay away from a butcher block. But some "character furniture" the possibilities are as endless as a woodworkers imagination. Throw a couple boards one eBay and see who bites, you may be surprised.

Mark
That's what I want to know. If you could make and sell stuff for that kind of money that would be great.
