Default Lumber in the Fort Knox area

We're just a couple of poor boys who have milled some lumber and would like to sell it. It has been air drying for 2-6 months. All of it is rough-cut on a bandsaw mill. We also have more logs and can custom-cut to your specifications.

We are not shipping at this time. This is for pickup only.

Please PM me for contact info and directions.

Here’s some prices:

Beech 1.10
Cherry 2.40
ERC 1.25
Hickory 1.25
Red oak 1.50
Sycamore 1.00
Sassafras 1.50
Walnut 2.35
White ash 1.10
White oak 1.30
Yellow Poplar 1.10

Prices are for mill-run 8’ 4/4 in random widths up to 8”. Thicker, wider and/or longer pieces cost extra. Prices are not valid for quarter sawing, figured wood (burl, ambrosia, spalting, crotches, etc.) which are priced on a case-by-case basis. Not all species on the list are in stock - please check. We may also have other species not listed.

We have flat-sawn walnut (some wide bookmatched sets) in 4-12' lengths, 4/4 and 5/4, 3 to 11-1/4 (possibly wider) widths.

Here's two shots of some wide 8'(?)L, 5/4 taken soon after milling (It's much darker now):

lumber-fort-knox-area-walnut11-1.25.jpg

Here's some 12'L, 4/4 in random widths still wet off the mill:
lumber-fort-knox-area-walnut6.jpg

There's also some 8'L, 4/4 in random widths in that stack. I also have some ~4'L random widths and thickness.

I've got lots of pictures that I'll add to this post later.

4/4, 8' spalted, wormy maple. 5 boards/2 bookmatches. One is partially wetted to show figure:

Second bookmatch of the same set.
lumber-fort-knox-area-spalted-wormy-maple-7.jpg
What I call Antique walnut flitches. These are ~70"L. 2 are 8/4 and 3 are 5/4. The true color was hard to capture. I would describe it as reddish cocoa brown:
lumber-fort-knox-area-3-14-08-015.jpg
lumber-fort-knox-area-3-14-08-001.jpg
I think this shot of a turning blank captured the color better than any other:

I was cutting that maple into firewood lenghts when I looked down at what was coming out and realized I was doing something stupid. Here's another 5 boards I got from it. They're 6"W, 4/4T, 9'-11"(?) long:

I got about 300 bf from this small 30' long cherry log:
lumber-fort-knox-area-davids-camera-033.jpg

It came out pecky. Here's a shot of one freshly milled board board that I partially wetted. Contrast it to the one to the right:
lumber-fort-knox-area-pecky-cherry2.jpg

I cut all of it 4/4T in random widths. Many of the boards have sapwood. It has already darkened with age into cherry's rich color. But I stacked allmost all of it on the bottom of this stack which has doubled in height since this picture was taken:
lumber-fort-knox-area-mixed-chry-sass-sy-tplo-.jpg

So we'll have to dig.

Well, a guy can't say those prices aren't fair . Are your getting any sycamore big enough to 1/4 saw?

We've got some nice 4/4 white oak (some marked for bookmatching) in random widths in 9-10' lenghts. All of this is fresh off the mill:
lumber-fort-knox-area-white-oak3.jpg
Some of the grain patterns in the above stack are very interesting.

lumber-fort-knox-area-white-oak6.jpg

And some 4/4 red oak in 12' lenghts, random widths:
lumber-fort-knox-area-red-oak9.jpg

I've added some wide 12', 5/4, qsawn to the above stack and some 8/4x6".

We also have some 8', 4/4 red oak in random widths.

I was hoping to get some good spalting from this 10' tupelo log on the left:
lumber-fort-knox-area-davids-camera-024.jpg

When I opened the log the spalting was confined to the outer ~1". So I cut it into 8/4 thinking I would use it for some building material. If I remember correctly it was mostly clear. I looked at it in the stack a couple months later, decided to wet it a little to see what it looked like. Here's what I found (just above the sassafras 6x6):

This next 8' tupelo log did show spalting:
lumber-fort-knox-area-davids-camera-023.jpg

So I sawed it 5/4 thick into quarter and rift sawn boards, and marked the whole lot for later bookmatching. Something like this:
lumber-fort-knox-area-davids-camera-023sawn.jpg

Sorry I don't have pictures. The whole lot is buried in the same stack with the cherry.

Sorry I overlooked your post Daren. I've got several sycamores I can fell. I haven't measured them but one may be big enough for q-sawing . And I've got a couple that are about 20-30" too big for our mill. I want one of them bad - it's very unique. But it will be a major undertaking. At the rate we work it will take a month of weekends for this one tree. But I think it will sell for a small fortune.

A LM2000 with a 31" D and 24" between rollers capacity.

lumber-fort-knox-area-may242007-002.jpg

Oh yeah. We've been given some as big as 54" dbh but they are in the waiting as we try to get caught up with what we already have. In the meantime they're still standing, and they're not getting any smaller.

I just talked with my brother. He’ has been talking to someone who wants to buy all the lumber we have at less than wholesale prices. Despite my best efforts he’s determined to sell all of our lumber in one foolish deal to someone he just met. I can’t seem to change his mind. This includes a big walnut butt log that may be veneer-quality my brother says he wants to mill for this guy and sell him the lumber for ~2.00 bf.
The deal hasn’t been struck. He’s meeting with him this weekend. Says he can’t wait for people to show up. I’m disappointed by this new development.

If any of you want some of this lumber before the deal goes through then you better contact me soon. The only way to change my brother’s mind is if he had some sales at reasonable prices.

Sell it all ! Mill more and sell it too. A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. Use the money to get "right" (if you had any payments/overhead) From your prices listed lumber/labor must be pretty cheap down your way, I know I could not compete in that market . Jack the buyer up to at least wholesale prices, if he is buying...he has a buyer on the other end. Find out who that buyer is, cut out the middle man and get a better price on wholesale until you figure out the retail market.

Something tells me you know exactly how to get to Daren's house, if that's where you are saying you are going, and you might even have the same last name . . . . Am I right?
