Default Free used band saw blades

I use these bandsaw blades in my machine shop for cutting metal. When I change them because they are getting dull or cutting crooked I have just been throwing them away. Now i'm wondering if these might work for wood? The blades I buy are over $50 each and I change them about every 3 months or so. The size is 120" (10') X 1" wide X .032". If you think you might like to try one and are will to pay the postage send me your addy and I will mail one in a flat rate post office box. I have 4tpi and 5/8 tpi varitooth.

Nobody does it locally. Don't know if shipping them somewhere would be worth it. Think I might check into it when I get some time.
Thanks for the thought.

In my area there is a guy who sharpens band saw blades for the local sawyers, including my brother. I believe he charges $7 each. I do not know if metal cutting blades can be resharpened this way, but it seems logical that it should be doable.
If you can locate someone who can do them, even if you have to mail them, you could save up several and send them together to keep the cost down.

My grandfather is 94 and he retired from his masonry business about 30 years ago and does small enginer repair and wood work just to keep busy and he sharpens blades for everyone and charges nothing. My dad has tried to tell him to charge more but he doesnt.. I mean he will fix somones lawn mower motor and charge $8.. LOL.. Oh well, he just does it to keep busy anyways.

Default BS Blades

You use the same blade material for metal and wood. The tooth and speeds are different for all types of material. Yes there are still people and machines that can sharpen them I had one years ago. It is not worth sharpening the blades. You can not make any money doing it. The machines are automatic and never get them back to new. You can buy a roll of blade in any tooth you want and make one up cheaper than you can buy one.
You need a blade to be just as sharp for wood as metal. If it is not sharp you can not resaw because the blade will wander, and the cuts will burn the wood if dull. When it is dull for metal it will be dull for wood. You can not even make minimium wage sharpening blades. Good carbide blades might be worth sharpening. I have one that is 3 inches wide with carbide teeth. It is $200 a blade. It takes a special machine to resharpen. I own 5 band saws and was a tool and die maker in Detroit 40 years ago. I have used both wood and metal bands saws sense 1962. My first job was on a drill press and band saw. Happy sawing.

Default 5 bandsaws?

When you retired they gave you one for every 10 yrs you worked right? I guess I shouldn't make light, I also have 5, 2 metal, 3 wood. My buddy down the road has the 3" resaw, carbide tipped, power fed, 2 motors, 3 phase. So I don't need to get another....well maybe? With this many I have the 220v blade welder to make my own from roll stock. I'd also like to resharpen my used ones, but haven't figured out a way...yet. Seems like such a waste to pitch them out, so I've got a small stack of them. I think the sharpening part wouldn't be too difficult, but resetting the teeth would be tough. They're probably case hardened and will break off? You think? BTW I'm up in northern oakland co, worked at GM Design for 30 yrs. Retired for about 9 yrs. Best to you, bill

One place I worked we would cut the old saw blades to length and grind the teeth off to make filet knives. They worked well. Rick
