Default wooden ottoman top cover

I figured I would try posting this here.

I have a soft ottoman that matches our sofa. I was thinking of building a wooden top that could easily be placed on the surface to give us a more firm and rigid hard top to play cards, games, etc. The initial thought was to cut a piece of plywood the exact dimensions and coat with a nice stain. I would like to make it look good by routing the edges. If I do this, I assume I would have to use some hardwood that woudl take to the router much better.

Any advice or suggestions...does this seem like a unique project?

Thanks in advance.

I would use a peice of plywood but band it with a peice of 3/4 x 3/4 solid stock so you can router it and not see the veneer in the plywood.
