Question Wooden Box Hardware

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum (and a hobby woodworker) so hopefully my questions won't be too annoying. I'm building a small (9 x 9 x 12) wooden box. The lid is going to be secured by a hook cam lock that is installed in the front and holds the lid down. Something like this:

I need the box to be secure so I need a hing that cannot be easily opened from the outside (unscrewed or the pin hammered out). I'd also like the box to open automatically when the cam lock is unlocked. So, what kind of hinge can I use? I've looked at spring hinges but most of them seem to be "self closing" not self opening. Your ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Eric

Just use "invisible" hinges of your favorite style and then place them inside the edge of the box. Add a small hole for a spring that can be glued in place in the box and push up lightly on the top of the box. It will have to be a stiff spring to resist fatigue over time while the box is closed, but don't make it too stiff because it will be hard to close the box and will put a lot of pressure on the hinges and lock mechanism.

Good luck with it.
