Default wood insert?

HELP!! Please! Ive built my house,Tons of other smaller projects, but ive never used these wood inserts before. I have a very old BEAR kodiak magnum recurve bow that I have shot for 30 years. The bow came from the factory without any inserts for quivers or other equipment and about 20 years ago I just drilled a couple of pilot holes and attached a quiver using wood screws. I use this bow a lot and am alwayse having to tighten them. I bought 8-32 brass inserts that have threads on the outside also and a strait driver slot on top.
Question... what size drill bit do I use???

This may sound simple, but what if you tried a hole the size of the main body of the inserts into a practice piece and if it goes in without splitting the wood, then chances are it would work for the bow, too. You have a great bow, it was made about 70 miles from here in Grayling. A great town in a great place to hunt. Best of all.

Default 8-32 inserts

We sell inserts so I am have some good information for you.

The brass insert with the notch is not really designed to turn in the insert on most as it can distort the insert. Put a 8-32 bolt with a nut for a stop in the insert and use the bolt to turn in the insert. Then when you take the bolt out, you have not egg shaped the insert and ruined the threads.

On most 8-32 threaded inserts you would drill a pilot hole with a 7/32 or 1/4 inch drill bit. Do a test in scrap wood to see which works best. If your going into hardwood, you can put the slotted end in first and on a lot of inserts it will help to cut the threads on the way in.

Agood way to avoid splitting the wood would be to get a tap that matches the threads on the outside of your insert, drill you hole the correct size for the tap, and thread /tap the hole before you install the insert. Then install the inserts with a touch of glue.
