Default thicknesser problems.

i have bought an old multico surface planer with over head thicknessing attachments but have found the thicknessing attachment to be a bit of a pain to use. with no feed rollers and the springs that hold the wood up, i have found it difficult to feed the wood through smoothly and constantly. does anyone have any suggestions or sould i invest in a dedicated thicknesser? and if so what would you recommend?
