JD, That's beautiful!! I'm definately envious. I was out in my shop today and I noticed the glue drips, stain splatters, and paint overspray on my concrete floor. You obviously have much more attention to detail. Great shop!!

O K ,I get the half azz shop award .
Just a little back ground .
I rented a building and had a great shop and it was set up real nice ,made a lot of cabinets and custom built-ins there . It was 3 minutes away from my last house but I owned 3 1/2 acres that had these pole barns on it and decided after 8-9 years to build a new home and simply for the fact I got into custom trim on new homes around then the shop kinda got put on the back burner because this barn handled what little i did at home any more . It's now been ten years and this is going to change now because I have tools in my basement ,garage ,the van and the barns and I think this economy is driving me back into the shop mode once again .

My friends refer to it as '' Mike's open air shop''
I had to take some of the barn lean-to off and a little bit of one wall to build my garage ,oops on the lay out of the house but the intention was to tear this barn down ,the township is now on my azz

Great shop you've got there!

Just curious though, what's with the 2 miter saws? Looks like you've got a DeWalt and a Hitachi there...

The Hitachi ... smooth ... soft start ... makes me smile every time I use it. The Dewalt ... a little harsh ... but very accurate. ... A few projects require continuous back and forth between right-hand and left-hand cuts. ... This rig makes that process a breeze.

I was debating about posting pics of the shop because I wanted to wait until it was "done", but I know thats never going to happen. So here is my shop, which is a constant WIP.

First a pic of the entire building. It is a two story structure totalling about 1400 sqft. This building is why I bought the house, I was just lucky that my wife liked the rest of it. I call this place my man cave, but my friends call it a "Man Palace".

Now some inside shots. All of these pics are of the first floor. I have all my woodworking tools in the garage section, while the other side is a catch all for lumber, car parts, tools, magazines and holiday decorations.

More to follow shortly.

Here are some more shots.

This is my recently "completed" work bench. I still have two vises to mount and I'm going to build some basic cabinets for underneath it.

I am limited on space, so I made the miter saw removable. I just slide it out and slide in a 3/4" piece of MDF. Its 140" wide 28" deep and 37 1/4" tall.

show-us-your-shop-sl730666.jpg

Upstairs is my rec room, complete with video game machines, pool and foosball tables, a dry bar, and other things. I built the bar with nothing but a skil saw and a cordless screw driver. The upstairs also has a half bath.

Lastly, the rear of the building. On the rear of the building is a 15' x 30' "awning" with a steel roof. This is the future spot for my wood shop. Sometime next year this will all be framedup and open to the rest of the main floor via 6 foot wide door on either side. This will add another 450 sqft to the shop. Also, the building is heated and cooled by a 2 ton Heil Gas Furnace/AC unit. Ducting is only run upstairs for now, but that will change soon. For now, the first floor stays around 60 in the winter and 75-80 in the summer. The duct work is run between the two floors and is exposed above the garage part. This gives me some radiant heating an cooling. Perfectly fine for the mild southern weather.

Big red, that's a nice setup you have there. I like the upstairs, it's a good place to hide.

Very nice setup! I must admit I would have to lose the foosball table and figure out a way to stick the drums, bass amp, and a guitar amp up there so that my friends and I have room to play...

Nice set up Bigred, but I don't understand that shop and rec room and a POS vanity WTF.

A wood shop and a half a day and you could have a great looking bath vanity.

The bathroom vanity was the work of the previous owner. Its on the list of things that are to be fixed. But it's low on the list. My wife has told me that under no uncertian terms that my next project will be for the house. I have to build a new shelving unit/shoe rack/dresser for the closet in the bedroom.

I keep looking at that miter saw station, and I wonder how it might be set up to say... swap in a benchtop planer, miter saw, jointer, etc... I REALLY like the idea of being able to swap that center section in and out to make a worksurface, or tool slot. My rusty brain thinks this is a good idea...

I finally took my camera out to the shop and took a picture. The shop was built late this summer, 40 x 50. It has been a life long dream to have a shop and now I have one. If you look around the shop you see lots of ideas I've stolen from you really clever folks, now if I could only steal some woodworking knowledge! :) Russ

After about a year of project my bulky lumber rack (which took up too much room) was finnally empty enough to remove and put another in. Now I will go buy more lumber. Check out the bag of dowels in the corner I discovered in the center of rack when I tore it down. Years ago a cabinet shop I worked for was throwing these out. Any of you oklahomans out there need some dowel contact me I have more than I will ever use. I Need to send some to my Father in law he will put them to good use.

That was the original plan. I was going to swap out the Miter Saw, Band Saw, router table, scroll saw(when I get one), and possibly the planer. The problem that I ran into was that each of those pieces of equipment had a different table height, plus I wanted to keep vibration to a minimum. That required each tool have its own slot to slide into, much like the the miter saw does. This was accomplished by using jointed 2x4s on the top and bottom of the station seperated by 3/4". If I had dimensioned the 2x4s better I would have been able to make it work. I will post more pics and explain all the issues I ran into in the showcase section when I get home. I can also scan in the plans but they seem to be gibberish to anyone but me.

Default My Shop

Okay well I am new here and new to woodworking but figure I should go ahead and post my shop/garage. I technically only get 1/2 of the garage because my wife's car gets the other side but all I have to do is mover her car and roll all the tools to her side. Hence the reason everything is on a wheeled stand. I can take down the table and put all the rolling carts against a wall and my truck and go in the garage but that is not usually worth the effort on a regular basis. I just finished the band saw cart the other day.
