Default routing curved surfaces

I am turning a football on the lathe and i need to put some laces on it. I would like to inlay them. I was thinking, rout a grove with a router and cut a strip to fit. What would be the best way to Rout this, or is there a better way?

WOW now that would be a challenge. If I where try that I would use a dremal tool. I use mine for all kinds of things. I have a router base and 2 router bits. Find some way to clamp down the foot ball and hold the dremal with both hands and go slow. Hope that helped.

I would lay out the pattern, and use chisels and carving tools.

you need to build a saddle that conforms to the shape of the football...then mount it to the lathe. Make the guide template out of flex polly glass... a rectangle... bend to the shape of the ball...scribe that arc to make two sides of the saddle that will fix to the lathe. All you need is a 1/4" by 1/8th" deep groove. Rip the inlay and carve the stich pattern on it... then glue it in place. Make shure the lathe is locked. Use a plow bit with a bushing. Rick
