Default Round Board - where to get?

I'm new to woodworking projects and don't know what the best (reliable, accessible) place to find a plain round board (or beveled) maybe three feet wide. I'm hoping to build a composting drum like the one here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Composter-Drum-Style/

But I thought I'd enjoy seeking out quality round boards that I can stain, to add a little style to the functionality. Any advice would be appreciated. I really don't know anything... I mean, would Home Depot carry something like that? I haven't seen it.

Hi bmerrell,

What kind of tools do you have? I think the round pieces will have to be cut by you, or a friend.

I have not seen any stock cut this way, but maybe other members will have a better idea.

Gotta make your own - nobody will have them. I recently made some large circles by using the center pivot point/pencil on a string method. I cut it with a jig saw.

In the example they used plywood, but the exposed edge of the circle could be a problem. Rain can get in there and end up rotting it. You would have to seal it with something like wood filler. And all the surfaces should have a coat of oit based wood preservative to prevent moisture/rot.

Solid would would require gluing together enough wide boards to cover the diameter of the circle.

Be careful of what you use to seal the wood with, this is a compost bin and you do not want any chemicals in the compost.

They sell pre-made rounds at Home Depot or Lowes for only a couple bucks.
Even some lumber yards will have some, just ask

Default Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll let you know if I can find them at one of those stores (I sadly don't have many tools yet, outside of the basic household ones). I appreciate it.

I have seen those precut rounds at Lowes. I believe they are for small table tops, but don't see why they won't work for what your wanting to do.

bmerrill,

I checked out that link and read some of those posts. A lot of those people obviously don't know much about compost. Are you a beginner? Or are you practiced at compost making? I have a personal obsession with compost and would be happy to share my experiences with it, if you're interested. My woman and I have been growing a significant portion of our years' vegetables for about 4 years now, and my compost pit is an important part of it.

Bmerrell Lowe's Lumber sells a few round slabs of wood. BUT they are not treated, and kind of spendy ($$$) I think I would make my own like others here have suggested. To draw circles I use a 36" small link chain and a finish nail to hold it in the center. The links are just big enough for the sharpened tip of a number 2 pencil.

I am a beginner. So please, any insights concerning compost and/or vegetable growing would be much appreciated. I have moved into a place with my first yard, and am getting rapidly into everything. All very exciting, but I want to do it right.
