At some point you have to quit reading blueprints and start hammering nails. At this point, where the thread is enterning the third page, my advice is to just get one!

It is a trait I get from my father... I hesitate with ever purchase i make... I always second guess it. It took me 2 years to buy surround sound for my basement. I just don't want to buy the wrong saw!

Thats a good price on that Powermatic 64 if its in as good condition as it looks. I paid $1300 for mine new with a router lift in the extension and I love it.

Just my opinion, but the last Hitachi table saw I bought, was junk.
Don't waste your money.

KNOTSCOTT

I found your comments about table saws most interesting as were the contributions of the other members responding to this thread. For me, a good table saw can rip an 8 foot pine 2 X 4 without effort; that’s about as demanding my work gets. But your discussion provokes some concerns. For example: I use a CMAN model 213.298031 ten inch table saw powered by a 3/4 HP cap start motor I took off of an old band saw. The blade is one of those carbide tipped 80 tooth jobs available at The Home Depot. All seems OK but I’ve often wondered if there would be any value in going to higher HP on this old work horse.
Also, my owner’s manual says the saw is made to run at 3450 rpm with a 1 HP motor. What would be some ramifications of running at half that speed with say a 2 HP motor?
Thirdly, what are the alignments I should be concerned about if a piece of stock contacts the motor after a cut?

Anyone know about that powermatic? can you add a router lift into the extension, or do you need to buy a whole new extension.... I can't seem to find the answer.

I just got an email from Rockler where it has the Jet TS for $399.99

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...903&filter=jet

It also says:
Add $35 if Residential Delivery
Add another $35 for a truck LIFT charge.
Add another $99 to the Shipping & Handling!

Looks like they really Nickle/Dime you good!

TS looks nice though...

I picked this saw up from our store close by. It is the best saw for $400. It takes a while to put it together, but it is worth the time. Buy the Jet. You can install a router base in the table later. The cost of installing later will be nothing when you have your new Jet for next to nothing.
Get off the fence and buy the saw.

I recently got the Bosch 4000-09 with the gravity rise stand and 25" rip capacity. Works well for me as I have to tote it around to jobsites. It's got the power and precission I need, and I'm really happy with it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Ok OK.... i did it. I found a jet contractor saw with 1.5 horse 110 or 220 volt motor and 30" rip fence for $250. It is currently set up for 220 so I will need to rewire it and he didn't have a blade for it so I'll have to get one. But the moral of the story is that I finally got a table saw.... and I have some room to build a router table.

it was on Craigs list... i called the guy about 15 minutes after it was posted and went out the next morning to look at it. It was about 45 minutes away from me. The guy said he was getting a ridiculous amount of calls on it, and although it wasn't as pretty as the JET hybrid that i missed out on a few weeks ago... but the price is right. And if for some reason I it doesn't work out for me, I confident that i could resell it and at least breakeven.
