Default Need help on routing

I'm trying to route 3/4" MDF board for a slot car track. Plans call for 1/16 routes in board. I'm constantly breaking router bits. The bits I'm using are high speed bits.I dont get very far before they break. I've already broken 5 and I havent made 1 1/2 curves yet. Can't find any carbide tipped around anywhere. Is this the answer or what? MDF is what was called for in the plans.

I would think that you would do better with carbide. Invest in a good one but you may be trying to cut too much in one pass, try to cut the slot in two or three passes going a little deeper on each pass. If you do this and go slower the HSS bits might work but I still think carbide will work better for you in the MDF.

I would agree that you are trying to go too fast and too deep on each pass. The size bit you are using will not take very much forcing at all.

I`m an old slot racer myself... try to find a three fluted bit... have to agree with the carbide. What kind of a guide are you using? I still have my old 1/24th scale slot cars I made from scratch... and they still work! Rick

You said 1/16 routes. Is that width, or depth? How wide a slot, and how deep are ya going?
