Default Lumber Online?

I've recently moved to an area where I'm highly unfamiliar. I had great connections with a guy in a lumber yard back on the east side of Oregon.

But now that's 300 miles away. I needed a few smaller pieces of maple so I used Rockler. But I was wondering has anyone had any experience with buying actual full lumber from any of the online carriers like 101woods or rockler? I'm just kind of worried that I'll get complete crap because i can't actually look at it before I buy it.

The one place I pick up lumber here of Myrtle wood, and Pine where they have a "wood room".

So any and all help is welcome, I'm just looking for somewhere I can buy online with hopefully reasonable shipping?

Thanks,
Jeff

I have purchased lumber from walllumber.com and pleased with what I get.

I have visited their location in North Carolina and it seems like a good business.

Call L.L. Johnson in Charlot(SP) Michigan----They have a website---I don't know if they ship but if they do --they are a real mill with a huge selection---real humans to help---and fair pricing.

Could a Michigan member add a link or more info?--Mike----

Hmm interesting actually right now I get a little wood from a place in Garibaldi Oregon called Myrtlewood Factory, but they really don't have what I'm looking for and it's more like scrap wood, and turning stock for the most part. Which is mostly okay for my turning needs.

Right now, I'm doing small(er) boxes so I wasn't looking for lumber and currently I'm in a relocation process. So I really don't have a large wood space.

I've read decent reviews from Rockler about their wood. So hopefully that doesn't turn out to be bad.

Rockler's wood if fine. Just very expensive. At least what they have in their stores is very expensive.

I am a little confused. Are you looking for larger boards or small stuff to make boxes?

If it is small stuff you want, there are a couple of people on ebay I buy from. Good prices for well milled stuff. You just cut it to size and build! Let me know and I will PM you or whatever.

I have the same problem, moved to Pinehurst NC and the vendors who sell quality lumber at good prices, only sell minimum quantities of 1,000 BF. The rest leaves much to desire, even at their high prices. Normally I buy in 200 BF quantities. Visited one of the big retail outlets close to Greensboro and the Cherry was the color of Country Maple.

We've got Rockler, Woodcraft, and Wood World of Texas in Dallas area but all three of them are very expensive. I'd like to find a local mill as well, but I too have been hesitant to order online and not see what I'm getting.

You know I never thought about ebay.. Currently I'm just getting small stuff for boxes, because I don't have really anywhere to store anymore where I'm staying.

I was going to have a few Russian Olive milled locally but the guy was asking for $375.00 for 100' minimum so I hastily declined.
By locally I meant from where I just moved from in the Walla Walla Valley.

If you were in Greensboro then you could have gotten to Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC without much more drive. They are north of the Greensboro area. They have good prices and will sell you any quantity you want.

Thx, there are two large retail suppliers, I tried the other one, next time I will go to Wall Lumber.

I managed to pick up 200 bf Cherry from a cabinet maker who buys wholesale and he was kind enough to add it to a 2,000 bf whole sale order for his shop. The quality and figure is superb and the price was about 30% less than retail suppliers. I may not have this opportunity again though.

I recently lived in Phoenix, AZ and bought all of my wood at Woodworkers Source. They also sell all of their lumber through the web and i have not bought anything over the web from them but i do know that they are great guys and have high quality wood.

Yes, Johnson's does ship anywhere in the country. I am lucky to live so close but my wife may not agree.
The have an online store http://lumberxpress.com/
or you can call 800-292-5937 or
517-543-1660
One note about shipping, you can order your lumber rough or planed. Seeing that shipping cost are based on weight it would make sense to have it planed, at least to 15/16" and save a little weight.
I don't work there but Johnson's is a big supporter of our local woodworking club.

Im finding eBay to be a very decent choice.

I received my Walnut from rockler, no heartwood not much character, 2 12" x 3 3/4" x 1/2" for 9.17.

Whereas yesterday stopped by the myrtlewood factory in garibaldi Oregon and hand picked some very beautiful planks of Myrtle. Which were 4.50 each. So idk maybe illl wait and pick up lumber when I go to the other side of the state or wait for craigslist.
