I would probably use MDF. It doesn't warp and is smooth as a babys but. It also depends on what you are making. I've got some jigs that I have used 1/4" plywood. Alot of times I just use what's on hand.

thanks for your help. I'm making a tenon jig and also looking at making a sheet panel cutting jig on gas struts so it will lift up to roof joists in my workshop when not in use

I use a lot of MDF and plywood.
I recently saw in one of the Woodcraft catalogs for phenolic coated plywood. I would be interested in hearing if anyone has used this.

I believe you can get mdf faced ply in US. i haven't seen it here in blighty but i might see if i can glue mdf to ply so i get the strength.

Melamine board works great, but is pricey.

melamine isn't that bad priced in the uk but found 8 sheets of specialist concrete shuttering ply with plastic laminate on one side so going to use it....
