Default Hardwood prices and sources question

I have limited hardwood lumber sources in my area and I never know if I am getting a fair price on lumber. Is there a universal resource that people use to price lumber by he board foot, linear foot, etc? I am curious what average prices are so I can figure out how I am making out. Also, does anyone have a reputable online source for hardwood they would be willing to recommend? I have never ordered online, but if I don't find anything reasonable in the Sioux Falls, SD / Sioux City, IA area I will explore that option. Thanks for you help!

This was posted on a thread here earlier. Search Lumber Sources. http://www.woodfinder.com/
Daren, TT and other sawyers here are most helpful, they will reply I'm sure. What are you looking for specifically? Surfaced 4 sides or rough?
I have very little experience with online wood purchasing but I have heard that www.walllumber.com is good to deal with. Also www.Groffslumber.com and I did order from www.Gilmerwood.com got some bass wood once. bill

Thanks for the response Bill, I will check those out. Right now I need at least surfaced two side and one straight edge. The jointer and planer are still on the to buy list but hopefully I will have them by the end of the year so I can get rough lumber. I can joint smaller stuff of my TS or router table, but I prefer to get S3S. Thanks again.

Have you looked on craigslist? There is a listing for lumber there for under $3 a foot for all types of hardwood.

I have checked my areas, but here is not too much listed and some of it is ridiculously priced. Does the one you are mentioning offer delivery or is it pickup only?

I have no clue. I just looked it up for you. Give them a call or am email, and see. I'd assume that if it's on clist that it's pickup only and cash and carry. I would rather drive an hour each way just to be able to pick through the material versus pay for shipping and be at the mercy of whoever picks the lumber and packages it to get exactly what you want.

Thanks Julian, I missed the link the first time I looked at your posting. I will give them a call. I also found another in Sioux Falls that is offering Cherry and QS W. Oak at 4.50 rough, 5.00 planed, walnut at 5.00, and walnut crotch at 6.00 (all per b/f). Do these sound good if the wood is good?

If it's nice stuff, that's not a bad price. Around here in the Chicagoland area I can find walnut anywhere from $2-$7. It all depends on how far I want to drive, so those prices are right in the middle.

have you called rennenberg hardwoods in brandon. i work in a lumberyard and i can buy better there than from my bosses supplier.

if you can fine walnut for 5 a bd ft i think that is a good deal. we sell our for 6.50 at our yard. just a word of advice... dont buy your hardwood from the big box stores.... they get outragious prices for their hardwoods.

if your willing to travel alittle i found a sawmill about 1 hr east of sioux city ia that has a good selection. i havent been there yet but im going to make a road trip first chance i get. if ya want to ride along let me know

Lumber prices greatly by area. This is especially true for hardwoods which may have local abundance or scaricity. Also depends upon how many small mills there are or are not available locally.

I have used walllumber.com many times. Cannot say if they are the cheapest or not, but I like dealing with them.

I also just recently found that there is a lot of lumber advertised on e-bay.

Thanks to all who answered up. I researched the websites and I think I have a general idea now of what I should be spending. This helps a lot.

Try L.L. Johnson's lumber in Michigan. They ship lumber. One side note is that they are not an "online supplier" but you can call their toll free number and order. This is great if you have questions or special requests.
They post their prices on their website...

You can find their phone number under the contact tab.
