Default Hard Maple

I have a job coming up, a big kitchen cabinet job actually. I have a couple questions about staining hard maple. I know its hard, to me impossible is the least I could say. A couple of months ago I built my cabinets out of hard maple and just cleared them. My customer wants medium stained hard maple with soft maple drawers. I know soft maple stains nicely but HARD MAPLE blotches on me. Any input?

One option is gel stain. It will not blotch because it sits on top of the wood, not into it.

Condition the wood or use a wash coat. Same question answered here

I always just use a toner, aka color in the clear.

Assemble a 6 pieces of the wood you are going to use and stain them in the shades you think they may want. Let them decide.
