Default First Flag Case

Just finished building my first Flag Case. A friend of mine recently had his dad pass away who was a veteran. He had the flag and it was collecting dust. It was a fun project and helped me practice some of my weaker woodworking skills, miters! I was really please the way that it turned out. I built a jig to hold the sides in the upright position, like a tenoning jig which I don't have, to get the 67.5 degree angle for the lower angles. I found a site that gave good instructions at http://diablowoodworkers.com/flagcases.html.
I had also never tried to put a spline in a miter.
Here is a look at it: http://dirtbiketrailsidaho.com/walnut.aspx, but you have to scroll through a couple other projects.

Rod you are one talented woodworker. Question... looking through your work, I'm curious how you put the "Whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God" on the top of that oak entertainment center. Can't see clearly from the pics, but I assume it is carved into the wood? Did you send it out to a CNC shop? Maybe a router/template?.. or carve that by hand?

Thanks, George. I got that walnut from a guy who had bought 2200 bdft back in 1978 from Arkansas. He was planning on trimming out his house with it, but his wife didn't like it. He had stored it banded in a metal grain bin all of these years. I bought 300 bdft from him for $3 a foot!

A friend, Woody, who was a excellent scrollsaw artist cut that out for me out of Maple and I mounted on a 1/4" piece of oak and screwed it to the front. I had printed out the letters on paper and he pasted them on a piece of wood and went to work. I wish I could take credit for it. I thought it was a good reminder of what we watch on TV as a family!

Rod,
I'm still trying to figure what you meant by "working on your weaker skills"...... Great work my friend, especially the flag box. I've made several and I get chills when I am priveleged to had it to someone with their loveone's burial flag in it. Thanks for taking care of a fellow veteran!

Did you kiss him before you drove off?

As I live in a heavily military person populated area we see a lot of flag cases. Some are a variation with a place in the bottom to display the medals/ribbons of the deceased.

That would have been appropriate! The last bunch I got he said he wouldn't sell any more, but I figure he has had good intentions for it for 30 years and he won't get around to doing anything with the rest. Some day I'm going to get a desk built with the rest I have to give to my son to match the book case. He is likely to get married this summer so it may be a good occasion to build it.

I've been told that some store bought cases aren't the correct size and i've got one that i was going to make a pattern off of. Can you give me the basic dimensions of your case (i.d.)?

I understand that there may be different sized flags, but the one I built fit the flag perfectly. I took it from the instructions I referenced in my original post: http://diablowoodworkers.com/flagcases.html.
The shorter outside dimensions are 18 3/4" and the longer outside dimension is 26 7/16" The longer bottom inside dimension finished up about 23" the shorter i.d. about 16 1/2. I think the flag I made it for was the standard issue to the family of deceased veterans.
Hope that helps,

Rod
