Default Fireplace surround

I am about to start build a surround for my sisters BRICK fireplace and have a question. As you can see from the scetch that I made, It's basically 2 cabinets with a shelving unit on top and the mantel will run between the 2 shelving units. She intends on putting her large flat screen on the mantle, so it needs to be well securred to the brick. I guess my question is, What would be the best method to build and attach this mantle? The mantle is going to be painted and can be built up wood instead of a solid slab. I don't know the weight of the TV or any exact measurements yet. Thanks for any help guys..Jeremy

The easiest way to do that is to frame out the box with 3/4" and a 3/4" back. Make the top a lift off. The box can get attached to the two shelving units by being screwed from the inside, and to the wall through the back. Once installed, set the top in place.

With the mantle being just framed out, it won't be heavy.

Cabinetman's idea is a good way to do it. I have attached a lot of mantles and surrounds by tapconning a piece of 2x lumber to the brick, then fasten the box mantel to it using screws through the top. The screws are about 3/4" off the back edge and normally can't be seen because of the height of the mantle. If you didn't want to see the screws, easy enough to countersink and plug.
