Default Boat building 101

Todays project is the braces under the seats.
Boat term is a crutch.

First make a mock up from foam strips.

When you are happy with the fit, use this to
make a foam pattern.

When you are happy with this, transfer to a piece
of stock, in this case I had to glue up a piece.

It takes a little tweaking to get it just right, then
check the other side with your mock up, pattern
and piece you made and make one for the other
side. I got lucky, just a tiny bit of difference, they
are interchangeable.

From start to completed part, X2, ready for six coats
of varnish,, just over six and a half hours.

How I have to do the same thing for the center of the
middle seat.

building a boat from scratch is by far the most intriguing wood working project that i can think of...furniture and cabinets and the like are incredible...but there is nothing i have ever seen that is as gorgeous as a hand built wooden boat....wow

Foam strips, very kewl idea! Had no thought of that one.

Nothing like building a boat to improve your, nothing square or straight to work from. What are you building? Looks like it's pretty close to done.

What are you building?
A twelve foot sail, row, skiff. Designed around 1900
called a Breeze Baby.

I still have five maybe six months to go if all goes
well.

I have the floors to finish, center board case cap.
battery box to build. Brass plates for the motor
mount. Then I will start on the mast and boom
and then I will make the sail. There are cables to
do, mast step to finish, rudder fittings, all the rigging.
The center board case is not mounted yet, the slot
in the bottom is not sealed.
Then we will turn it over and sand the hull and do
three or four more coats of paint.
I have a new trailer in three boxes to put together.

This was last week, I have put in 40+ hours since
this was taken.

Very nice. I love old boats period. We went Kayaking today and found an old derelict hull of what appears to have been a sail boat of some kind. Sad to see an old boat go to scrap.

Seems I have done a lot of work and not much to
show.

Spent more than a day on one small piece, ripped to
length, mitered the ends, built a jig to cut the slot.
It had to be prefect in the center so I cut the slot
with a router, then turned the piece around and re cut
it to be sure. It was off a few thousandths. Then it
had to be drilled, and rounded over, sanded and sealed
with teak oil, six times.

Finished the last piece of the floor. that is number
108 BTW.

Got the rails and the pointie part on. That is the cut
water to boat people.

Between boats and guitars, I'm addicted to build threads. That boat is looking really sharp! Not too mention the photagrapher did a nice job as well! One day I'd like to take on a project like that.
