Question best book?

i find reading to be the easiest way to learn anything. I have bob flexnor"s understanding wood finishing book & finditvery informative &easy to read. i've bought several other woodfinishing books & found them nothing but longwinded rehashing of basics. are there any other quality woodfinishing or joinery books out there?

I just want to say that I too have that book. Bob Flexner is a great guy and can teach finishing. I met him back in the '90's. I wish I had my book with me at the time so he could have signed it.

I don't know of any other books at this time. I'm sure someone will chime in and help. Red

I've had the same problems trying to find good books. Everything restates the absolute basics, but then never goes into more detail. So, I end up learning by trial and error.

I haven't had a chance to check out his book but I did check out his video at my local library once. I found it very enjoyable He really knows his stuff and is able to present it to his audience in an easy to follow manner. I also picked up some good pointers on furniture repair from the video!

There are some very good magazines out there. Go to your local library and browse their archives.

If you are after the one book on finishing, or the one book on joinery, I don't believe the opinions of a single author would be the last answer. You should look for a publication that covers current materials and procedures as well as tried and proven traditional methods.

It's likely that contributors to this forum that have extensive finishing or woodworking skills didn't learn them from reading books. Some of your best help might come from posting a question with a complete explanation of all the details involved with the project. Then, those with actual experience can offer advice based on your conditions, experience, materials, tools, etc. One advantage here is that you can have your own Q & A.

I read ...Adventures in Wood Finishing...George Frank. First printed in 1981... This is the one book that I always go back to (for tricks and sollutions to finishing wood). A must read! in my opinion. Rick

In addition to the Master Mr. Flexner Jeff Jewitt has written a very good book on finishing (can't remember the name right now but, it is relatively new).

Regards

thank you for both suggestions, i'll check them out ASAP. they both sound like pretty much what i've been looking for-something that will expand my horizons and give me new ideas, rather than just reteach me the basics.
