Default Bed rail hanger installation

How do you cut the groove in the bed rails and posts to accept the bed rail hooks? Or is the type that sits in a mortise and screwed in better.

Used a spiral upcut router bit if I remember correctly. Was a while back. You can find them at HD, Lowes or here.
