Default 100% pure tung oil

New here....I'm redoing about 1600 sq ft of hardwood flooring and the client wants a tung oil finish vs. stain and poly. As I understand it, most/allot of the tung oil in the box stores has some poly added to it so the more you put on the shinier the floors would get. client is looking for a matte/dull or satin type of shine , or lack there of. Is this right. and if so were can I get gallon containers of 100% pure tung oil?

Thanks

Oil used alone on any thing is not a good finish, but on a floor it is a recipe for disaster. If offers no protection against abrasion, heat ,moisture (either wet or vapor) or much of any thing else. While I am not a fan of most polyurethane varnish this is one application where it makes sense.

Regards

Here is one source for 100% Pure Tung Oil. I agree with what jerry had to say so you might want to get your customer to sign off on his decision to use pure tung oil. Sound like a guaranteed call back job to me.

I agree that wood floors won't benefit from an oiled finish. In this case an oil base polyurethane finish would be better. I also suggest a water based polyurethane specifically for wood flooring. It stays clear and will not darken the wood and dries fast. A product like "Pro Finisher" or equivalent will work well.

Default I would tell the client to

find someone else to finish the floor. Tell him you are not confident nor comfortable with a tung oil finish. No matter how much paperwork he signs, you will end up with a bloody nose.

unless he agrees to a poly, I'd do what Tony says...

In acrylic clears, Benjamin Moore has Stays Clear which comes in a low lustre, but Graham (may be regional...) has Ceramithane in high gloss, low lustre, and Matte. Excellent stuff, pretty darn hard

http://www.grahampaint.com/howto_wood.htm

read the how to, theres a couple tricky parts- no steel wool, and no tack cloths... this is water based stuff...

I've used them all, and the Matte sounds exactly like what the customer wants- he's just prolly so used to high gloss finishes he can't imagine a matte finish.

Oh well....

You win some...you lose some. Some aren't worth the aggravation.
