How would the members feel about having a carving section on the Forum?

Good by me. I tryed my hand at carving once. Those little knives are sharp. Now all you have to do is pass it by Nate "The Head Cheese".

Talking

Always remember that carving tools are not designed to cut things - they are designed to cut things off

Works for me. I am not very experienced at carving, but I have done some, and would enjoy learning from others.

Thanks guys

It really is much easier than it looks if you take your time, pay attention to detail, keep the edges honed and keep your fingers out of the way.

I would recommend

Warren Tool Whittler/Carver Tool Kit
as a starting set. And use basswood or limewood to start with - close grained and takes a good finish yet carves easily.

An excellent supplier in the US is http://www.qualitycarvingsupplies.com/store/page31.html
It's where I got mine from - great after sales advice too.

Have a look at my photos to see some of the stuff I have done
