Default Tapping hidden resources

Good Morning Gentlemen,

I woke up with an idea that I would like to run past you all and see if it warrants an addition to the site.

We all in some form, way, shape or another are drawn here for the love of wood working. Some of us do it for a living, some a hobby, and others to learn something new, but we all have our own sources for the items we use in our craft. I have seen time and time again folks asking "where did you get that?" We all know the usual haunts like Rockler.com, Woodworkerssuppply.com and a few others. I check in here probably 3 to 4 times a week (depending on my schedule) then spend another hour or so scouring the web for some new resource to add to my stockpile of favorites. I try to get a few new free catalogs along the way. Woodworking for a living sometimes is a hell of a way to make a living. Truth be said. Competition is fierce in the real world, so I am alway looking for an edge to add to my work that will put me a little more up the food chain when proposing to a new client.

Since we all come here and share thoughts and ideas, I would like to see a section added for resouces. Maybe even a sticky page that would be sectioned links compiled from the threads for lumber, glass, metal do-hickeys and the ever popular "Misc" heading. I feel this would save some time and effort to those who feel the need to search for that extra special item that is out there but just can't be found.

Please give me some feedback and let me know what you think.

this has kind of been done in this sticky thread started by Daren:

Good woodworking books, interesting articles etc. If you read something that you think may be helpful to another member, post it here. I am even adding links to reference. I am not crazy about the idea of links to retail (lumberyard for example) sites, just reference.

This can be changed if someone has a better idea. I think you should enter the subject in the title of your post. If it is about finishing for example, use that as a title. If it is just general, that is fine too. Tell us what you got out of the material as sort of an overview for someone else researching the same topic.
is this what you were looking for?

We sort of do it now. Anytime someone needs a source for something they make a post in General Woodworking. That's not to say it isn't a good idea to lump it all together.

I guess I am neutral on the idea but it's Nathan's call. Whatever he decides, we always appreciate members sharing their ideas.

aclose, that sticky thread is for reading materials. gunner is asking for a place to share sources for everything from wood to materials and tools etc.

In fact, Daren even stated in the quote you cite, he wasn't crazy about links to retail sites etc.

This seems like a great idea to me. I recently had to do a lot on online research to find some hinges. If there had of been a place here that I could have first looked it may have saved me some time.

I am a member of a goldwing site that uses the same format, and a good amount of the members there either are owners or salesmen of retail business. The site/threads is full of adds wanting you to buy from them. It realy ticks me off. but the moderator lets it happen. I am glad it don't happen here.
although a thread just for links to woodworking suppliers without sells pitches would be nice.
