So I'm getting really tired of all this back and forth and remembered seeing this under the users control panel a while back: Ignore list

Ignore lists are used for those people whose messages you wish not to read. By adding someone to your ignore list, those messages posted by these individuals will be hidden when you read a thread.

Suggest some of you start using this

The problem with that approach is that you do not necessarily want to ignore all posts by any one person.

You then have to read them first before you can decide if you want to ignore them. And of course by that time..............................

Good advice Sawdust but I believe either Nathan or one of the other mods took care of most of the problem early this morning by banning Mastershand.

Now maybe the forum will get back to normal.

I must say, that recently, this forum seemed to have a "frat-boy" persona about it, and this coming from an Alpha Sigma Phi alum. I'm sure I contributed to it as well.

Hopefully, we can move on from this, and continue to make this forum better.

Also, these ignore lists, how do you find them again? Just curious.... I can't seem to find a control panel for the forum , and I am on a regular computer.

Default on the black tool bar above the thread

Upper left...it starts with User CP, control panel, where you can modify all sorts of stuff and add a signature, get "subscriptions' for threads, add an avatar etc. bill

You may not want to "ignore posts" ,just screen them your self.
It has been said "If you don't like my posts, don't read them..."
but it's always a temptation in his case. I don't like 'em, but I still read 'em.

Thanks, Woodnthings.... I have actually used that before (my pic, and what not) but never noticed the ignore list. I haven't really wanted to use it, but wanted to know where to find it if the desire was ever there.

Holly heck!

All this has been going on and I did not even realize it. I took a liking to MastersHand. I liked his humour and his quick wit, but never saw a negative side to his personality.

When I read the thread title I looked in and my name could be on the "Watch List " because I too was guilty of a smart A reply to one poster who I should have just ignored which I do now.

I really had no idea this undercurrent was going on and yet I may have been closer to the kitchen then I thought.

many of the names here are guys that I have some respect for. mastershand, Firemedic, Dominick, Carpenter, Big Cougar, Cabinetman, Woodnthings.

All have helped me or gave me words of encouragement.

From what I can see this thread started out by mastershand calling out Johnray. Then it all went belly up.

Don't know where else to post this as I cannot seem to send private messages yet. Apparently my eyehandy.com post offended enough people to have it deleted. So I apologize for the post and my only intention was of light humor. Anyway, I thought this forum was made up of mostly adults and personally didnt feel it threatened anyone or anything. Anyway again I apologize, no hard feelings, and if someone could please send me a link to the forum rules I would appreciate it so that I know what they are. I searched for rules but it only came up with this and the one about pictures. I enjoy this site and have learned some good tips from its members.

I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize my membership. Thanks, Glen

This thread is only the end of the end for him. It was certainly not the beginning of it all.

On an unrelated note and not to pick on MH any further: I don't really like the notion that MH put forth stating that this is a "professional" forum. Yes, there are members here who are professional woodworkers. They happen to be some of our "most important" members, in the sense that they generally (in theory at least) have much more experience and knowledge than members like myself (hobbyists).

But - in my personal perception at least - the spirit and content of this forum is about and for the woodworking enthusiast of all skill levels. This isn't a "professionals'" forum in the sense I would understand that description to mean. My observation is by no means an attempt to belittle or tarnish the impact of the professional members. Please don't misunderstand my point.

And frankly, I'm GLAD this isn't a "professional forum". MOST of the members here would be out of place if it were. For I'd bet anything that the non-pros far out-weigh in number the members for whom this is an occupation. I believe that the membership-of-all-skill-levels structure of this place is what makes it so great. It is certainly a huge part of why I and so many others feel at so at home here.

So "Professionalism of this forum" "be damned". I really don't think any of this is or ever was about the forum's "professionalism". What it's really about is courtesy and respect and a call out to members at large to act like adults.

Carry on

How did you get your post broken up with carriage returns? When I use carriage returns the forum just eliminates them and mashes my text together.

A professional is one who has professed to some higher calling. There is no more or less to it. It's a pretty meaningless designation. One man's higher calling is another's superstition.

Vocation is anything one does for money.
Tradesman is a person who uses trade skills as a vocation. Traditionally the trades were passed father to son and later on the idea of apprenticeships and guilds emerged.
Avocation is a thing for which one undertakes a formal course of study to master and is also a vocation like engineering or accounting.

Since Howard Cosel's wild bastardization of the word “professional” in which he labeled any ball player who could move a ball from point A to point B as a PROOOOOOOFESSIONAL, the word has been progressively destroyed by people who like the sound of it - as if it some how confers dignity - which it most certainly does not. It doesn't mean one is any good at anything, nor that one behaves in any particular manner, nor that one dresses in any particular manner, nor does it mean that one earns money doing something yet people use it to say all those things and in every instance they are dead wrong.

Worse, modern lexicographers end up looking to colloquial usage for definitions and they take their queue from the masses. The masses have never been a particularly well informed source for anything. So dictionaries end up reflecting linguistic destruction and fail entirely at preserving language. And some day I will figure out how to get this forum to respect my carriage returns.

Uhmm, I agree that the word doesn't necessarily imply that one is good at something. But the word professional DOES - logic would seem to dictate - necessarily imply someone who does something as a profession.

The word for being very good at something would be "expert', or even "master". Or, if one were to reallllllllllly stretch it, "Chaincarver Steve".

Yah but that doesn't meant one earns a even one thin dime doing it nor even that one does it well. It's an entirely meaningless designation outside the notion of the higher calling - - - to profess to give one's life over to the higher calling. I submit that it's all pretty silly.

Anyway, give me a skilled tradesman any day. I don't want some school teacher, priest, doctor, or lawyer screwing around on anything like my car's front end and then sending me out on the highway at 80 mph. I want a skilled tradesman.

Yah I hit carriage return ( you young whippersnappers call it "enter") but I came up on typewriters so I use the old expression, which I think is vastly more accurate. So I just hit "enter" twice and look at the result.
