I like the idea for two reasons.

#1 There are quite a few cabinet makers here.
#2 Although I make a couple of nice designs myself, my repetoire is limited and I would love to get some ideas.
#3 I am building cabinets for our house now and we want a different design for the bathrooms than our kitchen.

Okay 3 reasons then. I hope Nathan thinks it's warranted I sure do!

Out of twenty years in the trades, I was fortunate once to work for a while in a high end shop in Truckee. Probably the most fun I've ever had at work. The amount of stuff your learn every day is priceless.

Edit: The only reason I don't work in one now is the pay is below poverty level, and I'd have to apply for food stamps.

What's wrong with foodstamps???

But on the other subject, I would love to see cabinetry section. I'm about to attempt to make my own out of hickory and I could use all the help I can get. Just don't take too long to start it up. I have to get started asap since I have been without any for about 7 months now. The wife thinks I should have had them done by now, but what does she know, right guys?

Are there any other sections we are missing?

Here's my .02 cents. Ya-all will probably jump all over me for this, but IMO, there are sufficient sections to cover questions regarding cabinetmaking. Just about any question, procedure, or tip, can slide into a slot we already have. OK...go ahead...poke away.

yeah, we don't really 'need' a cabinet making section. but it may help organize the site a little more...
looking for cabinet info and don't know how to search or that there is a search, where do you go? General info, Designs & Plans, Trim Carpentry & Built-ins? well, i go to them all. but it wouldn't hurt to have another consolidated topic.

Primary processing ? (for a lack of a better name) I and others field alot of "what kind of wood is this", there are more sawmill guys here every day, several questions about trees to lumber (a guy had a walnut, another a sweet gum, another a pecan...all asking milling questions) many questions are being asked about wood moisture content for example. I don't think we need a "sawmill section" per say, but fortunately more of the members are looking someplace other than Lowe's for wood that is all graded, labeled and have specific wood questions. I know general woodworking kinda covers it, but that section gets pretty busy (4 of the question on the first page right now would fall in this category maybe). And they get lost in the shuffle and asked again most often.
Just a thought, I get alot of e-mails and pm's about just wood, not anything woodworking specific, just wood/trees etc. in general. I think those e-mails and pm's make up 90% of my private correspondence here (the other 10% is TexasTimbers buggin' me ) I think some of the knowledge sharing going on "behind the scenes" would be beneficial to the forum, but some may not think it belongs here (or something?) so they just send a note. I am more than happy to answer any questions guys/gals have, don't get me wrong keep those notes coming. I just cleared my in/out boxes of 200 pms. I am just typing out loud trying to form a coherent suggestion.

Anyone is free to disagree, or make a more pointed suggestion. I am not sure this idea will get too much attention under the topic heading "Cabinetmaking Section" because there is not much solid wood cabinet construction anymore. So many reading it are more likely familiar with MDF and plywood, I am personally almost ignorant on those materials, I have no experience with them.

Not trying to pile on because I know you don't want a sawmill section Nathan for whatever reason, but as you know I had hit 500 PMs last month and while certainly most of them were not related to that, more than a few were.

For whatever reason, there is a significant number of sawyers and sawyer wanna-be's hanging out here who evdiently do not want to join the other two sawmill forums that have been around for years.

If you don't want to do it then at least talk these guys into becoming seamtresses and start a sewing section to give them something to do cause there are more than a few lurking here.

I like the cabinet section idea too.

i like the posts about wood/trees in general and love reading what the sawyers have to say. that stuff is fascinating, i don't know why, but it interests me a lot more than i thought it would. so i really like the threads that get caught up in 'wood' talk.
i didn't realize Daren was holding back on us. answering PM's without sharing with the general population.
maybe the moderators need to talk amongst themselves about how much PM traffic they get and try to consolidate that into various categories so that others can read up or chip in..?

I'm lost!!!!!!!!!!!I thought there was already a SAWMILL SECTION here.See,I'm a Sawyer and love what I do,I gave up a lucrative business building custom homes to cut wood.Stupid?Maybe, but I can't tell ya in the space allowed how much I enjoy sawing.I've been to a few of the "other" forums.I like this one.Met some decent people with alot of knowledge who don't mind laughing at themselves or others for that matter. It's a comfortable place to be.And just for the record TT said something about 500pm's about sawing or related somethingoranother.I'm new and had at least 10 PM's related to this subject since yesterday. My mistake for thinkin this was a sawing forum,I really thought it was since there was so much talk in the threads related to resawing and raw wood.Thats cool though, what an interest in an age old tradition.

NO NO NO!!!! I DID NOT SAY THAT!

Last month my mailbox told me I was 98% full and so I figured I better ask Nathan what was going on. We have a 500PM limit I didn't know about and so I had to delete alot of them.

I did and do have have quite a few sawmill/wood etc. related but by no means are the majority of them, even 25% maybe 5 - 7% of them were so I think that was a significant number for a woodworking forum.

Please re-read my post - in no way was I trying to lead someone to believe i was being overwhelmed by sawing questions and inquiries!

For example, one regulkar poster here (fess up if you want) asked me if I thought buying a small manual mill was worth the money since he had access to free hardwoods. i replied enthusiastically YES! that in fact I have access to free hardwoods and just got a $2800 order for cribbing last week and having free hardwoods allows you to take orders that would be marginal and make good profit.

Anyhow, There is obviously alot of interest in a sawmill section. Now that the sister site is gone I see no reason not to bug Nathan about it until he either gives in or bans us.

My bad TT,your absolutely right.I have a bad habit of making general assumptions and not realizing what it looks like once typed.I should have accurately quoted you.I was tryin' to be alittle less than vague about he 500pm's and related somethingoranother's but sometimes I type faster than my mind thinks too.To lazy to hit the quote button last night. You just happened to highlight something that I thought was oddly familiar to me in my short time here.BTW,love that bad mill of yours!! Makes mine look like a puppet!!! Mark
