Hi End Grain

I like cooking too, but since we moved, in March, my wife has taken over the bulk of the cooking duties, and I am doing most of the yard work. I also like photography, but so far just 35 mm. I am considering moving up to a digital camera, but I want one where I can do at least ten times optical zoom. There is so much interesting scenery, and wild life ariound here, I would like to try to capture some of it in images.

I also neglected to mention, in my first posting that I am an ardent beachcomber. The beaches around here are full of stuff. After the last bunch of big windstorms up here I have picked up a number of planks, and today I found some old growth cedar which I was able to split into boards. I got ten boards eight feet long by average twelve inches wide, and eleven boards four feet long average seven inches wide. I plan to build a set of gates in two panels of six feet by eight feet high, and rebuild some of the wall of my compound. I am also always looking for interesting pieces of driftwood for carving purposes.

Gerry

Hi Gerry!

35mm photography is excellent training and skill development for digital photography, especially if, like me, you actually control your camera rather than set in on full auto.

The interesting thing about digital zooms or zooms period! for that matter is optical compression and the effects it has on the image photographed. Many folks zoom in so tightly on an object that distant objects in the same picture actually appear much closer than they really are to the subject. And, depending upon the mode the camera is in, depth of field may be too shallow or vice versa for that perfect picture.

I still prefer 35mm and 6x6cm over digital because the challenge to capture that one perfect picture is significantly greater and the moment itself is that much more elusive.

Hi Andy

I think meditation qualifies as a hobby, but it probably is more of a personal therapy. I agree, it is good to clean out the attic once in awhile. I have not tried meditation, but it seems like a good idea to do if the junk is building up.

My primary hobby is less a hobby and more a lifestyle. That is being a musician in two original metal acts here in Indiana. Probably too extreme for most people, but we have fun.

I'm on the left with the dark hair. This is my band Signs of Decay. We fit the bill for thrash metal I suppose.

I am also in another band called Legion which has been around since the early 90's. I joined their ranks last year and it's been a blast. You can hear both bands on myspace ->

http://www.myspace.com/signsofdecay
http://www.myspace.com/legionmetal

My other hobby is aquarium keeping. I have a 125 gallon African Cichlid tank, a 75 gallon reef tank, a 12 gallon aquapod, and a 1.5 gallon tank at the office. Here is a picture of an old Anemone in my 75g:

I guess the image itself is another psuedo hobby. I like to tinker around with photography. The fish in this picture is a Maroon Clown fish named... Mr.Jingles. No idea why we named it that. I think it was an 11yr suggestion. It's actually quite a fitting name for this guy if you were to see him in action.

Oh yeah, it's on my list... :) I'm hoping to start on something this summer. When I'm at NAMM this January I'm gonna be on the look out for two things. A bandsaw, and a some quality wood. :)

Hi Rob

I figured you would hear from Corndog pretty quick, on account of his band playing and guitar building. Corndog would definitely be the man to talk to if you decide to build your own guitar. When I was in my twenties to early thirties I was quite into aquariums. One seperation, and divorce later, and I found my whole perspective had changed. Life became somewhat unsettled for a while, and I never did get back into it. Perhaps now that I have retired I should look into it again. The woodworking at least, managed to weather the storm.

Thanx Gerry, I've been there too....the only thing that stuck with me through thick and thin was my guitar......

One of the things I love about my hobbies. They all kind of tie together. With wood working... I can build stands, and hoods for the aquariums. I can also eventually build guitars, cases, cabinets... I can use Photography take pictures of all of them. :)

Hi Corndog
The whole seperation/divorce thing is quite a kicker isn't it? Oh well, I've had a real sweetie for twenty seven years now, so it all works out in the end. I was looking at your woodplanes on the woodplane thread. I just gotta round up all my odds and ends and get LOML to take some snaps for me with her DC. I recognise a lot of the planes that you and Daren have shown, because I have many of them, I just never became what I would consider a collector [of planes, anyway] almost every thing else though.

Hi Rob
I know what you mean. Many of my hobbies seem to blend together too.

I like to make skateboards, skate and play music, fish and sometimes hunt. Our two sons are 14&16 we have a music room in the basement, I play bass. Our boys are very talented musicians and they have taught me everything I forgot when I was their age. We built a halfpipe in our backyard last year, they and the exercise keep me young. My wife of 21 years is a positive force behind everything we do!
Oh yea, we also like formula 1 racing, we've been to 2 USGP's

I was into that for many years. I had 2 55's and a 125. I too had Cichlids in one of my 55's, they used to interbreed and I would have some funky colors. I had 2 Oscars in another tank by themselves one red and one albino, they got HUGE, I fed them 2 dozen minnows a week (they pooped like small dogs, I had to dig those out with a net). I still have the 55's, but have not had them set up for 5 years.

Wow that halfpipe is awesome! Wish there were dads like you when I skated and freestyled! I don't know if a board could withstand the weight of my fat arse anymore. I doubt my knees could, lol!

You must be the coolest Dad ever. I am with Rob and Cdog, the years have worn on me. I am only 40 and parts I did not know I had at 20 (I had like 3-4 parts back then that mattered) are not what they used to be. No 1/2 pipe for me now..it would be 3 days on the heating pad
