I like to walk in the timber and find weird trees. Here is one. 2 limbs grew out of this tree, grew together and then back into it.

I though I better add another picture before someone (like JP) sees the little bumps in one of the first pictures....yes it appears to be birdseye too . This is the same tree. I saw all the bumps (the picture was taken with a camera phone, you can't see even 1/2 the bumps. It is covered) and as I walked around it I discovered the "handle". The handle is on a limb and is not as figured as the main trunk.

It is not clear from the pic's that the two branched are integrated back into the trunk, as opposed to just kinda stuck into the bark.

In any case interesting.

What kinda tree is it ... and where is it..??...

It is in central Illinois...you got me on species right now. It is still early and not everything has leaved out. I will look at it again once it has more foliage, it only has a very few immature leafs.

Birdseye?, did someone say birdseye?

I see some ripples in the bark too. Birdseye and tiger stripe?

That baby needs a date on Daren's mill........

I'll take some pics this weekend at the Logger's Expo in Maine. They have a ton of vendors with all sorts of neat stuff for milling/woodworking.

Daren that's cool. I wish I had a camera everytime I saw a cool tree. I'd have a full time job just posting them because I think all trees are cool.

2 little problems...it is WELL into the timber, I would need a horse/mule to bring it out (that is not a biggy, I have a buddy who I actually ride mules with) The bigger problem is it is on a guys ground who probably didn't even want me putting footprints on his soil, you know the type, let alone logging on him. I just went for a walk and ended up there on his acreage following my nose sort of by accident.

Good eye, yep there is some curl there too. You know we have a sickness right? (seeing trees naked is not normal ) Here is another tree I took a picture of the same day...since we are talking ripples. This is a 36+" DBH honeylocust that is nothing but ripples. You can see the big waves in the crappy photo, but up close the whole thing is smaller waves showing in the bark. If it is going to show through the thick darn near armor like bark of this old tree, there is a treasure hiding below.
Not to mention the weird crotch to the left of my quart water bottle I hung on it to show scale. The horseweed is already waist high around the tree. That crotch looks like a waterfall and is at least 6' long.
I will try to get a better picture up close with a real camera some day....maybe that one will hit my mill . For now all I have is past experience and x-ray vision, but I would bet a dollar it is a good one.

I hear you. An interesting log or standing tree stops me in my tracks these days. My wife says at least I'm not stopping in my tracks to look at another woman (it's not that I don't look, I just don't stop. I'm no dummy, been married 13 years this month, like to keep it that way!).

I still haven't had the chance to check out that veneer place. I bet I could make some cool mantel pieces out some of that oversize stuff.

I'm anxious for logging to start back up around here. I've got a couple crews that are on the lookout for the unique/unusual on their jobs. After I showed them how nice burl cuts/old growth stuff looks, they kind of got bit by the bug. Not as bad as us but enough.....

Default Northeast Logging Expo

Take a look at these pics I took at the Logging Expo in Bangor, ME last weekend. Some really beautiful work in a display tent I wandered into. Some beautiful price tags that went with them but they all had SOLD stickers on them...

I forgot the prices.

Birdseye coffee table - $700

Flame birch dining table and chairs - $3,000

The pictures don't do it justice. The grain patterns in the coffee table were awesome, obviously from an old growth log.

Every couple that was walking by, the wife would veer into the tent towards that table. It really is something. Not that the design is all that complex either, just the wood is what makes it.
