Default Spelling

I've noticed a few comments about spelling on woodworking forums. There is a free spell checker available on the net. I got my copy from one of the "PC" mags. It was either World or Magazine.

The spell checker runs in IE. When you right click a menu pops up and there is the option to spell check the entered text.

The URL is:

http://www.iespell.com/download.php

I've been using it for quite some time.

I adopted a child from India to help with my spelling.
Thats not a racist statement. I am just saying they have a great language arts program in India.

I don't get riled up over spelling, but it used to stick in my craw to see someone refuse to learn the difference between "then" and "than".

I'm not referring to the occasional slip, we all do that from time to time myself included. But when you have a 50/50 chance at getting it right, and you almost always get it wrong, especially when it has been brought to your attention, all it does is show that your ignorance has morphed into stubborn stupidity.

The owner of a forum I used to frequent could not properly employ the use of the words "then" or "than" if his life depended on it. You can work with ignorance, but you can't fix stupid.

We all know the other oft misused words, and the use of "non-words":

Misused:
  • accept except
  • illicit elicit
  • capital capitol
  • allusion illusion
  • to too
  • your you're
  • there their they're
  • affect effect
  • principal principle
  • me myself
  • past passed

Non-Words:
  • towards (there's no "s")
  • anyways (same deal, bucko)
  • irregardless

Misquoted phrases:
  • could care less could not care less
  • batting down the hatches batten down the hatches
  • mute point moot point
  • adverse to averse to

Other then those words and phrasyologies, me ain't got no problems excepting you're illusion too the passed elicit mis-takes of others neither in principal or in fax, irregardless of there attitude towards it. Anyways, I could care less sense its a mute point, and after all I ain't adverse to batting down my hatches if its in my capitol interests. Lettuce go eat sum barbie-kew than.

If some words stick to your craw do you mind telling us what species of insect you are. By the way Iam sure many of us were impressed with your intelligence and thanks for the lesson in the english grammar.
I myself do not care if people can or cannot spell correctly I just enjoy reading the threads.

Shucks trashcollector. I weren't trying to impress anyone. I gave up on that vanity a long time ago! Nor was i trying to give anyone grammar lessons I was just trying to participate in the thread.

I know where you are headed with that, but the word has more meaning than you're giving it credit for. It's derived from the Scot word crag (pronounced with a soft "g") which, depending on how you used it could mean neck, throat, or mouth. To get "stuck in the crag" meant it wasn't going down well.

I'm one of those Irish Scots whose grandma passed down the culture. I didn't realize it at the time but I "...sōōked it ŏp læk ì spōōnge lädæ".

I'm sure i didn't get all that correct but I remember how it sounds.

Yeah, that's how I took it, TT. Nonetheless, I was a bit impressed with the accuracy. I see it in the classroom all the time. The "then/than" problem is one of the biggest, and many of the other examples you mentioned come up, too. Of course I correct it then because that's what I get paid to do.

Outside of the classroom, I never worry about how people talk or how they spell or post messages on the forum, although I do think it's helpful to use paragraphs and an occasional period (Okay, so I might cringe a little when someone says "irregardless" but, hey, we've all got our peeves).

BTW, nice tool, rrich.

I don’t care about spelling because I’m the worst speller, but after seeing what the kids are texting, I feel pretty good.
My problem with spellcheckers is that they don’t know what I’m thinking. I may be using the wrong word and if its spelled correctly, then its accepted.
I can never get the words “quite” and “quiet” straight. I have to look them up to be sure I got the right one. I drive my wife crazy with the words “definitely” and “defiantly” because even the spell check can’t figure out what I want.

If you mean "Edit", not so. unfortunately. The spell check link works: http://www.iespell.com/download.php, however,
I know for a fact that unless I proof read my own post before I hit submit there will always be a "typo" or a "mispelled" word. I don't know how to spell mispell? I just ran the spell check .....it's misspell. bill

Default An Apology

Guys,
I never thought that a link to a spell checker could stir up so much venom! I apologize for starting this.

I'm just a guy that had an extreme difficulty spelling words correctly. The tool, just like a router, has helped me to communicate with y'all without looking like a complete idiot due to my poor spelling. (My choice of words make me look like a half an idiot, but that's another story.)

BTW - Every now and then, when I run the spell checker and it tells me that there are no misspelled words, it really makes my day. Between ieSpell and MS Word spelling checker I am learning how to spell.

I have Fire Fox on my laptop computer and it seems to have come with a spell check. At first I thought it was doing it through this forum, but then it happened at another forum. I know I didn’t install it or at least I don’t remember. I don’t think I did because I’m so afraid of spyware attached to freeware.

Yes, Mozilla Firefox does come with a spell checker installed. As has been stated, a spell checker can be installed for Internet Explorer.

I do not get upset when I read/hear poor grammar or incorrect spelling, but I do get irritated with poor presentation. Poor presentation interfers with my ability to read what had been written.

Poor presentation consists of, but is not limited to,

* lack of punctuation
* not using capitals
* long paragraphs
* poor selection of type size/font (not a problem on here.
* unexplained acronyms
* jamming everything together
* etc.
