Default Scam artist on Craigslist

I placed an Ad on Craigslist yesterday and as of today I have been contacted by four scam artists. Don't these guys have real jobs that they need to be at. I can't believe this.

I posted a cedar chest I made on there for sale, within 6 hours I had 17 out of state people that wanted it. They all wanted to pay with cashiers check and for me to send it to them, they would first send the check for hundreds more and I could split the extra for the hassle of dealing with a shipper or moving company. I still have the chest Just got tired of dealing with them. Good luck to you

I had a similar experience with some truck parts that I posted about a year ago. Funny thing was that most of them were the same guy. His letter (misspelled words and all) was identical. The only difference in most of the responses was the e-mail address. Many of them were the same except they had different numbers after the name. I seldom list anything anymore and usually list for local pickup only. Guys I work with have also had similar experiences. We mostly use a local server that allows postings on a local basis only. Not worth the trouble.

I have never heard of this before. I have bought stuff from Craigslist but I have never sold anything. I wanted my wife to sell all my big stuff on Craigslist if anything would happen to me, but now I got to teach her about this sort of thing.
Does it never end? Just one more thing to deal with, isn’t anything free of scum. I put a car up for sale in the paper a while back and after only one day of undesirables showing up at my front door, I pulled the ad and donated the car.

I posted my 1984 F250 on Cregslist a few weeks back and had the same thing happen. After 7 different out of staters wanting me to cash a check bigger than the truck is with, and pay to have it shipped. I just took it off and I will try again some other day.

The reason they do that is there are alot of people out there not as smart as you were. Many people would have took the check deposited it and sent the item. a few days later the check bounces becaause it's a fake and they get stuck owing the money that they deposited and any extra charges.

Another one is the credit card services that want to help you with your credit cards. Then they ask for you account number to varify if you qualify. Many people fall for this and end up with credit card or identity theft. What I don't get is if they are that far in debt how can they get credit or anything in there name but it happens.

I pay my bills and I switched all my accounts to a credit union since they give better rates and didn't have to be bailed out. I closed 3 well established accounts because they changed the limit and or interest since they got stuck with bad loans and needed bailing out.

Hard times is when the scams start and they prey on the weak.

I was wondering if there is some authority or agency one could report these people too. This has got to against the law in some way and since it’s across state lines I would think it was a felony.

Default You are correct and it's a Federal crime.

The banks will lose money if they don't catch the phony Cashiers Check and you will loose your merchandise. They probably will loose a greater amount if the check was for consideraby more than the value of goods. So the banks are watching out for this too. This is such a common SCAM that by now everyone should be aware of it. I think a personal check upon clearance by your bank and their bank would still be a safe method...then ship the goods. If this is not satifactory, meet in person accept only cash or ammo. That's as good as gold these days! bill

When dealing with craigslist, cask is king! I don't waste time dealing with the scammers. Make sure to post that you will only take cash and no money orders or cashiers checks to let the scammers know whats up, and they might walk away without even trying.

Default Don't cash that check

On a large purchase they will want you to cash a large cashiers check and pay the delivery pickup out of the excess funds. That way they leave you without your merchandise which they will now have a middle man sell and the bank will REQUIRE that you pay back the money that YOU falsely aquired with the phoney cashiers check. Most of these scammers are in some foreign country but they use help wanted adds to get people to reship or sell the merchandise so they get paid. They use some type of search and usually will hit the ad within a couple of days of its original posting. I have left merchandise posted and after a couple of days the most of the scammers have lost intrest. They are looking for people who want to sell their stuff quick.

This would explain the spam which asks for people to simply receive cheques and then forward the money on after deducting commission.

The cheques bounce after you have sent the money.
