I'm really surprised that no one on this forum saw the human interest that the town took in that funeral, and had anything at all to say about it. Maybe I'm just a bad judge of what has meaning.

Default NOT AT ALL C-man

The folks in Texas take their love of country a whole lot more seriously than some in other parts, especially big cities. I had seen the video previously and was awestruck in the support the town put out. If you've ever ridden in a motorcycle parade or Rolling Thunder type of event it's a similiar emotion. Makes the hair on the back of your neck and head, if you have any, stand up and a choking feeling in your throat and tears in your eyes. These are real American's and proud of it, to honor a fallen soldier who gave his life to support ours. There is no greater gift on this earth than that. All our military living or passed on deserves that respect and honor.

Bill, I gotta say that I'm more bewildered than anything else. What irks me is that anyone on this forum that is serving or has served in the military knows the indifference shown to our military. To have no comment is really amazing. It's just not on this forum. I posted this on another and the reaction was as bad. Go figure.

If you consider all the military does, whether you agree with it or not, what else do we have. If that soldier in the hearse only knew the respect that was shown.

I'm not one that needs a continuing pat on the back, but maybe our country would be in better shape if it was more like this:

Cabinetman,

First, I suspect a lot of folks just didn't look at the link, thinking it was something completely different. I know I wasn't expecting anything about a funeral.

Second, I suspect the only reason that funeral was like that is it's a small town and the servicemember who died was probably fairly well known, or his family was. When death comes to your door by way of someone you personally know, it's far more significant than an unknown soldier, right or wrong.

As for the commercial, the sentiment is nice, but it's still a commercial and it makes me sick. I don't think Anhauseur Bush should have put their name at the end of it... then it would have been a real thank you. Otherwise, it's just PR and makes me want to punch their executives in the throat because it deliberately plays on people's emotions, which I think is despicable. But that's just me.

As a lifelong member of a military family and a Vet, I still don't think the military deserves any more respect than any other person. Yes, it's a volunteer force, and yes, they do their jobs even when they don't like them, and they put themselves in harms way for good and bad reasons (depending upon your politics) but so do firefighters, police, paramedics, power linesmen, and plenty of other people. You rarely see people standing up and cheering on those professions. It happens more after 9/11 (at least for cops and firefighters) but it's still rare.

Anyway, just wanted to put my two cents in on this one, since you asked.

I clicked it, and have done so several times over the last several years. I have opened and forwarded the e-mail many times. It is touching, and I respect our service men and woman, but the Blog is from 2007, its been around for a while.

First off I was one of the ones that missed or overlooked this thread. I just started looking at the "New Post" and don't remember it popping up until this morning. I think I have seen this one before and it is a very touching story.

Frankp I'm sure this is another one of those post that you just knew someone would have issues with. How fortune I was logged in this morning. I think that we as members of our armed forces don't necessarily deserve more respect then everyone else just because we served. I do however strongly believe in giving respect were respect is do.

Have you ever seen or known someone that was awarded the CMH ? I had the pleasure of serving under General Livingston who had won the CMH and I have to say that there was an incredible feeling of respect and admiration for him. I would say not just because he was a general but more so because you knew he was among the select few that have earned that award and lived to receive it. Then there are the ones who are killed in combat do they rate more respect then a fallen firemen or police officer ? No but they all rate the respect of those they died serving.

Lack of respect is a big problem in this country. Lack of respect for laws and the police that try to enforce them. I'm proud to say that I try to raise my children to respect the police, firemen military or anyone that gives more of themselves to help, serve and protect others. Just because you join the military, police fire department etc does not mean you deserve more respect then everyone, but the ones not willing to walk in your shoes but enjoy the safety and freedom that is provided them should have and show respect especially for those who are killed.

Although this story and even something like in the commercial don't happen often I think there's a feeling that it should. It's funny how for most people they don't trully appreciate what the Military, police etc do for them until it hits close to home for them.
