We do not need an acronym list. We need people to go back to writing like they were taught in school.

Any time you use an acronym you must first spell it out. eg. Today I was using a random orbital sander (RAS) to sand the top of the bookcase. After that it is perfectly OK, within the same thread, article, etc. to use the acronym. It takes very little time, but makes reading much easier.

Personally, I have no interest in going to an acronym list just to see what someone meant who was too lazy to write it properly the first time.

There are many acronyms that are not nationally accepted because of use over many, many years by a large portion of the population. Eg. NASA, and FBI.

It's just a shorthand method of communicating amongst people who share the same interests/ skills. Anyone in the armed services knows that acronyms are used for almost everything. Computers the same.
Law enforcement has their "10" codes.

Oh yes they are when it comes to writing. Of course there are some who just think that it is modern or "chic" to use abreviations. It makes then part of the "in" crowd.

Certainly abriviations have been used in the military. Of course they are always used in the proper manner. They are first introduced in the correct manner and then universially used after that. The "10-codes" are also first taught to each individual before being used. None of these are things that were just picked up and used willy nilly.

One of the big things that came out of the Study of 9/11 and Department of Homeland Security was the recommendation that Emergency services QUIT using local 10 codes and use common descriptions due to conflicting codes being used by different departments working on the same incident.
By the way (BTW) I work for USPS and am aware of many acronyms currently in use only by them but they also have redundancy as I have worked for them for now 19 years and some of the acronyms that I learned when I started have been retired and then reused. I guess we are supposed to either die off or quit so there won't be any confusion as to which one they are talking about now.

OFF TOPIC BUT,
A uniform sysytem of 10 codes needs to be in place.
The reason for communicating with the codes is "security" and
"brevity" when under duress. You don't have minutes to have a conversation sometimes only seconds, therfore the codes are needed.

I wouldn't trust today's DOHS with my dog. When we let politicians determine the means for our nation's security, we are doomed. Security professionals and experienced military who know how to fight and blow things up is who I want defending us. Our borders are a joke. bill

Although I think George may have been referring to my use of ROS for Random Orbital Sander (it's in common use on the kayak building threads I frequent) I tend to agree with him. Acronyms are great for the folks in the know but this forum, especially, has a lot of old and new alike. I like the list and maybe we can have one of the mods sticky it so people can use it as a reference when in doubt, but defining your acronym on first use in a post really is the best policy.
