Default Help selling woodworking art online...

Hello.

I have a relative that is proving to be a real talent with creating works of art using wood. Since we're both new to this industry, I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions for how he might be able to sell some of these items online. There is always eBay, but are there any other places for artisans specific to woodworking that are out there?

I appreciate any help you can provide...

Thanks!

Howmuch,
Depends on what kind of stuff you are trying to sell. There are a couple of threads on this in the last few months, if you type in a search for 'craft show' they will probably show up. Certain types of items do well at craft show, depends on the price point you are at also. More expensive artsy items probably need to be in a gallery or on a nicely done website.

I frequently view several art / craft sites that have various items listed for sale. You might try selling on http://www.etsy.com/ or http://www.deviantart.com/ or http://www.artwanted.com/

Then there is always the old fashion way of selling your work and meeting your customers at various art fairs. Good Luck

Default I have done craft shows, website , roadside and ebay

I did craft shows for 10 years they have pretty much died out. People go but don't spend like they use to it more of a day out. I haven't done them in like 5 years here lately but went to check out one of the better ones this Christmas and it was terrible. Now you have this recession that tends to get people more into the craft show type things. They don't have allot to spend but would rather pay "Joe the woodworker" then say Wal-Mart. So maybe try a craft show and see, but watch the cost some can run $400 for a single 10x10 booth and may require you provide a tent or certain displays. I have done just as well at some $35 dollar a booth shows or by setting up on side the road near a large traffic area (Wal-Mart) as I have at the $400 dollar shows. Go and check out a few and see what is there and selling if anything. Figure what you want for the items you are selling, now ask 5 - 10 friends and family how much they would be willing to pay for a item and then ask what would it take to get you to buy more then one. I sold Holiday lawn signs and I priced my stuff to sell more then one but still make money.

Ebay works to get started but can get expensive to many fees. Use ebay to get people going to your website. Paypal is the best for payment on the internet. If you get the premoer or buisness account you get charged 2.5% on what people buy but if you use the debit/Visa card for your acount you get 1.5% cash back.

Web sites are good but you need to advertise to sell, look into web rings (linking sites together) Google Adwords works well you can control how much per click and limit the amount per day that it cost you. You can also control the area for which the ads will be seen. I have wanted to get away from the lawn decorations for a good while so I could do other things. I have a certain amount of people that still want the signs but I have been avoiding it since I painted tens of thousands of the damn little things. I may do it on a limited basis but I'm not sure. I hope it helped and Good luck.

aside from craigslist and ebay, there are still a lot of places on the net to try. you can search for classifieds on a specific area to start with.
