Very interesting.

Reminds me of an article in our local paper about 30 yrs. ago. A couple of guys were cutting cedar burls (Western Red Cedar) near Elkton, Oregon, and found an antique single shot .22 pistol completely grown over inside a burl. The gun was in good shape except for one tiny nick where they nicked it with the chain saw, which is how they discovered it.
