Default Getting a "real human" on the phone

When you call a bank or credit card comany, sometimes they have a recording that might say "Just tell me what you'd like to do." And you're supposed to say something familiar to them like "Transfer money" or "Make a withdrawl". Well, I've come up with a way to get a real human on the line. When they ask me what I'd like to do I say something completely non-understandable like "Phou blah trikler blah yad huker tik blah blah." Then there's a 3 second pause and they say "I'm sorry, I did not understand you. Please repeat what you would like to do." And I say "Blikert frot drit blah tiwer ryn." Then there's another pause and they say "I'll connect you with an operator." Mission acomplished !

jake, have you ever tried calling verizon or comcast? Verizon is getting better lately, but they're notorious for not connecting you to a real person and then usually it's the wrong department and you have to go through the whole process again.

There's a website that tells how to get a real person for all kinds of different companies: www.gethuman.com

Default phone message fiasco

Isn't it a sad case when we have to have a website to help us get a human to talk to? I forgot which government agency I was trying to get a hold of recently and went through the same scenario. I was cussing and yelling at the phone recording and never did end up with a human. It told me to call back later. The other thing that you have to qualify these type of systems with is when you finally get a human, it's nice if you can understand them. I spent two nights in row, an hour each time with some slurpy salesman trying to get my internet connection working when it had gone down. He couldn't fix it. I called a different number the next day and got ahold of a nice American gal about ten minutes away. She had someone over in another ten minutes who fixed the problem.

I once tried to contact my local phone company to cancel service at my Mother's place. After many long minutes of dealing with the directory I was told that a real person could come to the phone if I would only wait one hundred and ninety one minutes. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Sometimes I prefer not getting the human because like vietnogi mentioned, you might get "Bob" from India. That always cracks me up. I usually ask them what their real name is, and they'll usually say something that sounds like a cat trying to cough up a hair ball.

I'm lucky enough to be able to generally understand most people speaking English as a second/third/etc. language so speaking to them doesn't annoy me as much as the fact that they invariably can't actually help with the problems/needs I have because the companies disect their businesses completely for purposes of tax loopholes and the like. It's quite frustrating.

I know it is a dated concept, but whatever happened to "service"

I think the meaning is getting lost - soon the word will be taken out of Webster's big book.

Maybe, I'm old fashioned but I was surprised when I expected service from my insurance salesman. In the past, I've had insurance guys that actually helped people when they wanted to file a claim. A few years ago, I wanted to file a claim, so I went to the insurance guy's office, and was astounded when the receptionist "helped me" by handing me the 800 number for the claims department, located in another state.

Another thing that really burns my britches is sales calls from middle-eastern-speaking people. I understand that everyone needs a job and a way to make a living, and I understand that being a phone soliciter must be the worst job in the world, and I really do sympathize for the poor guy, BUT I AINT BUYIN' from him!!!

Sorry, enough of my ranting.

my power company is all automated, but once you type the number of the department you want the computer tells you how long of a wait it is and that some one will call you back. Its nice not having to wait on hold, just hang up and theyll call ya when its your turn. Wish more companies were like this, spent 43 minutes waiting for a real person with the irs today all to tell me that they made a mistake and not worry about it.

I try to do as much as possible by e-mail now. I just find it a lot easier.
