I love Rush as well. My son is just now where he thinks he wants to attempt some of pearts licks. I can play 98% of his stuff and my son thinks it is awful radical. His stuff isn't hard to play it's just difficult at first to put the stuff he does play in the right place. He useis alot of syncopation, odd and shifting time sigs within a simple 4/4, single quarter and double 16ths and 32nd upbeats on the hats and ride, poly rythyms, and oh yeah, he's pretty fast.

There are alot of "better" drummers when it comes to technique and speed and everything else, but he was very innovative and original they way he applied his style.

Do a youtube search and watch him play his Buddy Rich tribute. Then watch a few Buddy Rich vids. Niel Peart himself will tell you he cannot walk in Buddy's shoes. No one can. Buddy is the man.

Who is the best drummer in the world? I am. " Buddy Rich

I never understood that quote. I don't know who is actually credited with it but it makes no sense. I bet whoever first said that didn't have a wall of gold and platinum records and millions in the bank. Not bad lyric writing if you ask me.

His lyrics appeal to a large group of . . . . . thinkers.

I have seen that very video of Peart you are talking about. I thought you were a Buddy Rich fan. I have a bunch of stuff bookmarked I watch over and over, some John Entwistle bass stuff and Keith Moon drumming. I am more of a vocals man, I used to sing in a band (never any good, but that did not stop me, we did Doors and stuff, some Rush, Led, The Who...) Here is one of my heroes. Rob Halford, for an old dude he can still sing beautifully. Acoustic Judas Priest doing a Joan Baez cover "Diamonds and Rust", one of my favorite songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIC7KQPDuDc

Hey Daren,
I'm with ya on the conservative bit.

I mostly listen to talk radio, but I have a hard time doing so in the shop. I tend to get distracted, the last thing I want while playing with my toys.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to listen and work at the same time and I'm not saying folks shouldn't. Personally, I just can't do it

I'll flip on the radio when it's time to clean up, other than that, I let the saws sing!

None of you have satellite radio, Sirius or XM? I have Sirius and love it. My most listened to station is "Buzz Saw" (#19), Mostly play a harder rock and roll. My second favorite station is "Classic Vinyl"(#16), the older rock and roll from the 60,70,80's. Usually I play it so it is a little louder than background. Other times I listen to it full out. I'm alone, so what the heck - I do what I want.

I always listen to something when in the shop(basement ) It varies from time to time. Some times rock, sometimes blues, sometimes country. Last time it was a Johnny Cash cd.

I have different music on for different phases of what I am doing at the time. My wife can tell where I am at in a project by just what is on in the shop.

designs and layouts- classical ie Bach, Beethoven etc
carcass cutouts sides tops bottoms - hard rock the harder the better
shaper work -50's style
sanding and staining- classic 70s and 80s rock
finish spraying- disco

county and western not allowed in shop ever. lost 3 radios to mallet damage because assistant settled on county stations.

I have been working by myself for more than 15 years and I talk to myself. It helps me keep facts and numbers straight in my head. When I go on an install I "warn" the client that I do this. I have had some women comment on the fact that I do talk to myself and I have to laugh. They probably think I am loony, but it is one of the things that keep me from going off the deep end.

And I thought I was the only one who did this

You are not alone Daryl. I am sure there are plenty more where we come from. Maybe someone should start another thread. Title it, "How Loony Are You Really?"

Hey Scott,

I am not a huge fan of contemporary style but that Conference Room Table in your gallery is nice. I am more interested in knowing about how you processed the top itself if it is a slab versus engineered wood.

If it's a slab, maybe hit the highlights of it start to finish? Maybe make a new post in the showcase gallery.

It would be especially cool if it is a solid slab from a fallen Katrina tree.

And it would not hurt my feelings if you elaborated on that purpleheart entertainment center either! Especially the mechanics of the glass insertions.

They look like a simple groove that the glass sits in.... maybe some kind of wedge to hold it in?

I sometimes have NPR on the radio until they get into something that cheeses me off. A lot of times it's CD's with the headphones. Jethro Tull is the current favorite, but I have many from "back in the day."

My tuner is hooked up to 2 speakers I had some years ago, and I can't recall the wattage but it's ridiculous. When I have a music station on 3 on the volume level is "comfortable." At level 7 I could probably get the police to come over even though the shop's some distance from houses. I had it up to 10 once and the floor vibrated.

Wow, thanks for the interest guys! Sorry, I havn't been around much work has exploded. 60+ hours a week. Any way, the conference room table was constructed of 4 laminations of 3/4 mdf and a final plastic laminate finish. The table structure weighs 840 pounds without the top and was constructed to slip together in sections. The top was 1-1/2 thick slab of polished granite. The total weight was somewhere around 1800 pounds finished. It was a paying gig and I'm not really a contemporary style type either Texas. But it pays the bills.

The "Purple Zebra" media stand had a solid 1/2 carcass constructed beneath the Purple Heart w/Zebra striping. The glass was 1/2 thick and slipped into a groove 1-1/2" deep by 3" wide. The grooves were also lined with black cork strips to "bite" into the glass. Friction and gravity held them in place. That piece took 1500 to build and sold for 4500. I have plans for another "out there piece" but I need the right client for it. I plan to put a 25,000 price tag on that one. A 50" plasma tv will be included in the price.

Thanks again for the interest

I'll try to get back more often
