Generally it means that the fabric has been washed
in hot water before being sold.

Do not depend on it though.

Asked the wife about this, she was a contract lawyer
for JC Pennys and handled contract specifications and
stuff like that for years. It may be hot water safe, but
not bleach safe.

reason I asked is cuz i have a sofa that came with few bottles of professional strength leather and conditioner

directions states to use colorfast soft cloth only

I have not seen any store carry this so called colorfast soft cloth

sounds to me [after your post, BHOFM] like a cloth that was prewashed in hot water

Well to be sure then I'm gonna look up the manafactor that made the conditioner

Go to Wal-Mart and get some of the auto detailing
rags, by the dozen. they are great for everything.
Almost as good as old cloth diapers.

They are around $5 a dozen and you will find a million
things to do with them, I wash them till they get
ragged around the edges.

What the manufacturer is trying to do is get you to use a cloth that will not bleed it's color to your leather sofa. If you use a soft WHITE cloth you will have no problems. I save all of my old undershirts for cleaning and polishing rags.

yea now I very much understand what colorfast means and quite frankly that term is rarely, if ever, used...

if they said instead used soft white cloth then that is a no brainer

Complicated, or specific, depending upon your perspective. Most people who do laundry understand at least intuitively what colorfast means so it's a safe way to word the directions. If they had specified a color, even white, some customer would get pissy about it and complain that they have to buy a special cloth to clean their couch and therefore wouldn't buy the furniture. People are ridiculous that way.
