Default Wooden pumpkin

I was hoping that this would have been completed for halloween, but it took a little longer than I expected.
wooden-pumpkin-img_3356.jpg
It measures approximately 9" in diameter and 7" high. Completely of red oak, this one was a pain to make. The combination of intarsia shaping and segmenting, made this one fun, but it also made it so that I will never make another one.

A shot with the lid off.

Default Very nice

What did you use for the inside? Flocking or felt sheet?

The inside is done with flocking. I'm not a big fan of felt and have never had much luck with it. Flocking, for me, is pretty much idiot proof.

Cool pumpkin Ken! I think you are alright with this as a Thanksgiving pumpkin decoration too. Actually, that brings up a question, is there Thanksgiving in Canada? The only thing I may have considered different, and this is just personal preference, is that I may have used an orange flocking, just cause it's a pumpkin and all. Don't get me wrong the green looks really nice too. This would be really cool in Osage Orange too. Finished Red Oak is beautiful and you did an excellent job finishing this one. Cool as usual Ken.

Thanks for the kind words. Our thanksgiving is in October as apposed to the American thanksgiving in November. I guess it could be an autumn decoration. It doesn't really have to be a particular day. Osage orange would be really cool, I just wish that I had access to some.

Cool pumpkin, don't pumpkins usually live in a pumpkin patch with many others though? Just joking , very cool.

Very unique pumpkin Kenbo.
I think it needs a few more to keep it company. Now you should be all warmed up to make some barrels. Looks like the same process.

You learn something new every day, and it's not always woodworking.

Neat, Ken. I have a question on technique. Did you do any of the shaping of the body segments before glueing them together (by, say, using a belt sander) or did you do it all through carving after the glue up?

That's so cool. I'm sure Charlie Brown would love it.
Really though it is very nice.

All of the body pieces and the lid pieces were shapes prior to glue up. The angles were all cut, and I removed all excess with a band saw to minimize the sanding, which was done with a combination of disc sanders, belt sanders and oscillating sanders. Finished it off with a quarter sheet and some hand sanding. Once all of the shaping and sanding was done, I glued the sides together 2 pieces at a time. I had a little trouble with the clamping, but it was a good learning experience.
Thanks for the compliments.

As for making more of them to keep this one company.....
I've got bad news for the pumpkin....it's gonna be lonely.
Ken

I can understand what you mean about not wanting to make another. I'm just glad I got a chance to see this one. You're always putting together something cool.

Thanks Rob. I don't know how I missed this post. I'm starting the annual Christmas season woodworking now. I'm running a little late. Just can't seem to get any ambition lately. Hopefully, I'll have pictures of those soon. Still planning a Canadian ski trip?
