Default A Toy Box for my 1-1/2' Year Old Grandson

After seeing the blanket chest I made for my Mother-in-Law, my daughter hinted to my wife that she would love to have "Grandpa make a toy box for Noah". When I asked her what colors she would like, she asked if I could make it match the other furniture in his room. I tried to get it done for Christmas, but even in Texas, the weather can get too cold to get a proper finish. I got it built and stained then waited for a nice day to put shellac on it. The first 2 coats worked perfectly, but the 3rd coat is cloudy. It really shows in the pictures because of the flash but my son didn't notice it until I pointed it out, so I didn't mention it to my daughter. She thinks it's wonderful.

I found a "Slow Close" mechanism online that will keep small fingers from getting hurt.

I'll keep practicing finishes and before next winter I'll get a heater for the garage/workshop.

Bob,
Nice job on the toy box, the daughter should be proud. Pflugerville Tx. I figured Pflugerville would be in Min. Just alittle humor

We get all kind of jokes about the name. It's German, so the P is silent. You should hear people trying to pronounce it the first time they see it. Besides Minnesotan's are all Swedish. Aren't they?

Thanks for the compliment on the toy box.

Bob

I love the name on the front. He's going to have that piece forever! Great job.

I thought the inside of the lid looked that way too.

What stain is that? I like the deep color. Nicely done Bob!

I left a 1" gap where the lid closes to avoid the slamming of the drawer on fingers but the slow close idea looks good too!

Actually the inside looks more like particle board to me.

I think it looks carpeted, or some sort of cloth lining....

I made the box out of 1/2" birch plywood. I originally thought I would paint it, and the letters, some bright colors, but my daughter asked if I could match his other bedroom furniture, so I stained it with Minwax "Red Mahogany". I had to brush on several coats to get it as dark as the sample piece she gave me. I stopped as soon as I got the color, but before I lost the grain. I lined all of the inside with 1/16" sheet cork, hopefully to protect both the box and the toys, and I didn't have to try to stain the inside.

Great idea with the cork! Looks like a sturdy box that I'm sure the grandson will enjoy plenty.
