This is what I do with wood - and this is what got me into fine woodworking...I noticed I payed to much attention to small details on these sets, and in reality most theaters cant afford precise detail. They just want it to look good under lights and from 20' away. Here is the company website...

www.crosstownscenic.com

And here is one example of a set made from flats and lauan, then the lauan was stained.

Hey Mike,
Looks pretty cool. Do these sets get used for awhile, or is it something that is particular to one play and then they get something else?

Most of the shows these sets are for go for ~6wks. We work with a lot of theaters that do new shows, so they usually are a one time deal - which means that set pictured above was demolished after six weeks. Our scene shop salvages the usable items, but unfortunately we have to throw a lot of the wood away (unless anyone has any suggestions, I would love to donate this stuff to a good cause!).

I checked out the link you provided - very impressive. I'm involved in our little local theatre (volunteer stagehand), but so far have resisted attempts to get me to make props and scenes.

As far as the wood that gets thrown away, seems to me that your personal workshop might be considered a worthy cause for at least SOME of it! Do you have a Habitat for Humanity outlet in your area? They may be interested.
