Default My First Project Ever

So I'm a complete beginner. My very first project was going to be a toybox. Well I decided to begin a little smaller, and since my older two girls have a stepstool we bought from someone, I thought that I would make my 1 yr old her own. It isn't finished yet. It's in the process of being stained and such right now. But here the little thing is. Like I said complete beginner, so please no laughs!

No laughs from this place...we all started somewhere.
The only thing I would comment on is the lack of leg support. Butt joints are not that stable and I'm afraid with a little use, this might get enough racking motion to loosen the legs and, well, someone could get hurt.
I would cut a piece of lumber to fit snugly between the legs and glue and nail in place...near the bottom.
Also, a little more sanding or profiling on all the edges. They look a little sharp for my tastes.
If you have any questions...fire away!

thanks rob!

um...there is actually a dowel running between the two sides. i didnt capture a very good picture as i just took it with my blackberry and sent it that way. (wife doesn't want her good camera in the garage)

more sanding on the edges....i feel like i already sanded for about 10 years on them...i'll give them a little more shaving.

but question...it isn't too late too sand that i've already done one coat of stain is it?

I agree with rob I was thinking the same thing when I saw the pic. you to add support to prevent racking. That will help avoid a trip to the ER. And I also agree we all started somewhere.Your first is a stool mine was a whale shaped cutting board.

That's part of the game.

This is the floor in the boat I am working on. There
are 108 pieces to the floor. Each one has to be cut
to length, shaped to fit the contour of the hull, rounded
on top edges. drilled for the through
rod, sanded, sealed, resanded and varnished six times
with a light sanding between each coat!

I have been working on it for several months.

That is why it is called woodworking!

And fifty years of boat building and you will look
like this, a biter old bald headed fat man!

Good idea to start small and work your way up. Sometimes people try to take on too much and then just get frustrated.

I'm sure the little one will enjoy the stool. Keep at it.

to answer your question it is not too late to sand more...it will affect your stain but the great thing about stain is that you can always put more on and it will blend well...after you poly it you will never know
