Default Lithopane Frames

Made from poplar, I used pocket screws for the joining. Cut the letters from 1/4 inch poplar. Finished everything off with different shades of minwax stain and final coats of laquer. Made for a nice weekend project.....not only was I paid.....but in true Marine fashion...a 12 pack mysteriously appeared at my front door.

Very nice work. I had never heard of a Lithophane Frame before and had to look it up. A most interesting project. I guess using candles for the lighting is no longer a good thing to do. (fire hazard)

I can see the lighting on the red frame, but not on the blue frame.

This project must have been for F-4 drivers.

Keep up the good work.

GeorgeC, F4s? They look more like F111s to me...but it's very hard to tell from the angle of the pictures. We haven't been flying F4s for a while, even in the Marines.

Nice projects, USMCBAZ. I'm also curious about the lighting for the blue one. I can't see anything that would be hiding the lighting source.

Very nice. I'm sure you'll enjoy the beer, too.
Still hot down there?

Look very nice. I like how the grain came out in the one on the left.

F-4's? F-111's? I am gonna go out on a limb here and say those are Harriers fellas. We are talking about the Corps here. My dad worked on the F-4's in Vietnam! They've been gone for awhile.

ACP, good eye. I was pretty sure they weren't F4s as they've been out of service for nearly 20 years, but I hadn't thought about Harriers.

Definitely not a Harrier based upon the link you provided. In the picture(especially the red plaque) the tail is entirely wrong, too low, and the cockpit to nose length is too long. The picture in the blue plaque does bear a vague resemblance to a Harrier. The producer of the picture may have intended the aircraft to be a Harrier, but they did not do a very good job.

The aircraft on the plaque does have the nose of the Ardvaark, but again the tail is entirely wrong(too short) and the cockpit has too much bulge. In reality the plaque may just be a depiction of an aircraft and not meant to be any one in particular. The plaque aircraft may be a hybrid F-111 and F-4. The F-4E and later had rather long noses.

There are many pilots still on active duty that would claim the F-4 as their main aircraft. The last active duty F-4 squardron in the Air Force (AF) was not deactivated until 2004. That was much less than 20 years ago. The last marine F-4 was deactivated in 1992.

They are Harriers, the famed North Carolina Lawn Dart, the Flying Coffin. I see them and hear them everyday.
