Default I've never made anything larger then a pen out of Cocobolo until now....

I've never made anything larger then a pen out of Cocobolo until now....

I had a request for a large mirror, the overall frame size is 32x44 (if i remember right)... and it is about 2.75" wide at it's widest part

I cut an arc in all the pieces, which proved to be ALOT harder then I anticipated to make it look good, and then routed some profiles on the edges... i ended up working for less then minimum wage in the end because of all the issues I ran into. And I had to surface the wood thinner then I wanted to because the 0.75" thick board that I had was warped, so I ended up about 0.60" thick in the end.

The final product came out very nice in the end, I'm pleased with it.

Pictures aren't the best because the frame is so larger I need to stand far back!

Nice looking mirror. Nice looking piece of wood. Gotta watch when pricing these projects. They always take longer than what you think.

Dvoight very nice figured grain. I don't think I would have put the arc on the outside edges of the frame but it does look very appealing. I've never worked with Cocobola before so I am interested in the challenges you had.

I agree with leatherneck - nice tight joints - what method did you use to join the miters - dowel, biscuit, pocket screw, spline or just a glue joint?

Thanks for all the great compliments. The miter joints of any frame are what make me pull my hair out, but these came together very good.

I typically like to do a contrasting spline on a frame, but in these case i didn't want to because the I didn't want to break up the color of the cocobolo. I didn't want to leave it as just a glue joint because it is so larger and cocobolo is so dense and it doesn't always take glue well. So I used biscuit to give me a little more glue surface and keep things hidden.

The biggest pain with cocobolo for me is that it clogs up sand paper super fast, so I went through alot of paper. The second issue is that it makes me sneeze... not as bad as it used to though. I used to sneeze the instant I cut it, now it isn't so bad. I just wear a mask when sanding. It does finish beautiful though!

Cocobola makes me sneeze like crazy too - even with a mask. Furthermore it makes my nose run like a faucet. I did find that snot will shine up a cocobola pen nicely!

That's great. I love the colour and the shape of the frame. Great job.
