After seeing Rob's great scrollwork on the candle holders, I got to thinking that it had been a while since I sat down at the old scroll saw and made something. I had an hour to kill, so I set out to make a new keychain rack for the downstairs closet. A lot of dust later, this is what I came up with.

Nice Kenbo, real nice. Looks like a machine cut it out. I think now you need to make some miniature antlers to hold the keys.

Moose?!?! Okay, I thought the elephants ears looked a little strange. Now that you mention it, it does look like a moose. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Inspired by Rocklobster, huh? You kill me, Ken.

You cut with precision. It's unique, too. Who would have thought to cut out a dog with a giant butterfly on its head?

Honestly, though, I can't believe you did that in only an hour. If I could scroll that fast, I might keep a saw in the bathroom. I could bust out a few puzzles or something while I'm on the john.

Rob

I would love to do something like this. Question: do you use some kind of pattern template (that you buy or made yourself)? And then pencil into the wood so you know where to go? Or do you just throw down a piece of wood and a few hours later have that?? Great work!

This was a pattern that I had found on the internet. I modified it to use it as a keychain rack. I photocopy the pattern, and spray the back with spray adhesive. I let it dry for 3 minutes and rub it down directly on the wood. From there, I cut right through the photocopy. Once all of the cutting is done, I use a heatgun to remove the pattern. (it softens the adhesive) A little mineral spirits cleans up any glue residue, some sanding with different grits and there you have it.
Hope this helps.

It's an easy formula. It goes like this......
Willingness to learn + determination + practice = unlimited possibilities with wood.
You may make some designer fire wood along the way, but in the end, you'll be pleased with the results.
