Default first attempt at inlay

This is my first attempt at doing any sort of inlay. A Christmas present for the G-Parents in law. Anywho, it's 4" red oak with a 3/4" white pine inlay and a couple coats of poly. I've built a few crosses before and this was definitely the hardest to get lined up and looking good, but It's not too bad.

Not bad for somebody with Sausage fingers.
Seriously, looks great. Nice contrast, very clean and crisp. Did you put a keyhole slot on the back or something like it for them to hang it up?

I didn't do anything yet to hang it. I'm probably just going to put one of those metal hangar things, like what's on the back of picture frames. I've got a box full of them, figured I'd use them If I could.

Nice job!
I just built one with a little shelf and bracket on the bottom to hold a candle. Mine is walnut. How many tries on the miters? I was going to go for that look but since I had to make about 9 gifts in 2 days, I opted out. Also, do you have any support on the back to reinforce the miters or just glue? How did you clamp it?
Again...it looks good.

It took forever to get the miters right, especially since the pine inlay is about 1/32" off center. Just put it together, marked where it didn't meet and just barely shaved off the opposite end to tighten it up. I wanted to use a biscuit joiner but I don't have one, so I glued and toe nailed some 1" long staples in the back. Used two bar clamps to hold it and put some weights on all four ends to keep the clamps from pulling it up and warping the whole thing. Ended up perfectly flat.

Your inlaws will love it!
