Default A few new duck calls

Here's some of my more recent duck calls:
This one is curly claro walnut. The finish is boiled linseed oil.

This one is hedge/osage orange/bois 'd arc. The finish is a couple dips in spar urethane.

This one is curly claro walnut with a gaboon ebony insert. I like the black with the walnut. The walnut is finished in BLO and the ebony is buffed and waxed on the Beall.

Cocobolo...

Dumb question: Sorry but I am not a duck hunter. Does the various species of wood make them sound any different or is it just for looks? They all look great by the way!

Species of wood has quite a lot to do with it. Properly tuning them and knowing how to make the toneboard and tone channel makes a bigger difference though. Dense woods like ebony, cocobolo or blackwood are louder and a bit more crisp. Less dense woods like walnut tend to be a little more throaty. All have a place in different hunting locations and scenarios though.

Nice ones. That Claro Walnut one makes me salivate. I got to find some wood you can't live without to trade you for one of those.

KC as always that is some great looking work. I just purchased the book; Turning Custom Duck and Game Calls. Hoping to hop on the bandwagon and make a few this winter. So be ready for some questions.

I have the same book it is very helpful. One word of caution I would not purchase any of their offerings though. I bought one goose call insert and it took 6 weeks and the postage cost more than the insert. The size of the inserts OD was some off the wall size. I used to use their suggestion for mandrels, but "kc" suggestion are much easier to work with. If you decide to make the calls that are in the book and need help feel free to ask.

Yeah that book has some good hints but some of the methods in it are not the only way to do things. The book really centers on making calls from kits with o-rings and such.

Nothing like making the entire call from scratch. Much greater sense of accomplishment for me that way, although the ducks don't know the difference!
