Default Fathers Day gift

I had a day at the shop set aside for doing interviews because I need a few more guys to help.

I put this together in a day while waiting for "no show's".

The box is made from a combination of Red wood; SAP & Heart grade. I lined the inside with Spanish Cedar.

I love the lid on that thing! Nice work. Especially for being done so quickly.

Thanks Rob. We ran about 5000 lf of redwood siding a few months back. As we fed it through the planer, I saw a few gems that I just couldn't let be lost under a painted exterior.

Someone not show up for an interview these days is beyond madness. Unless they just put a resume in EVERYWHERE and then decided to weed through them. Great Job on making the most of your time !!!

Nice box Jason. Are you going to use it for a humidor?

No, not going to use it as a humidor. It will most likely be used in my Fathers game room for pool chalk and darts. I pick the Spanish cedar for a liner just for kicks, but it sure smells nice. :)

Wow, no one likes a show off. But that show off sure makes a great looking box. Fantastic project. What are you going to finish it with or are you going to leave it natural?

I put lemon oil on the out side of the box, let it dry for a day and I'm in the process of spraying a water based clear finish on it. Nothing on the inside.

The grain on that lid just keeps looking better after each layer! Sanding it w/ 400 today and giving it the last three coats.

I'll post another picture when it's all done. Thanks for all the compliments guys!

Beautiful box. And if I was anywhere near Vermont, I would show for an interview. Great job.

Very nice, is the lemon oil for color or does it have a different use?

It does two things. It enhances the color and helps bring out exceptional looking grain (like curl). It also helps to preserve the wood by replacing some of the natural oils it loses during the drying process.

If you are going to put a finish on top of that, give it about 24hrs to dry. Just got done with the last clear coat. Should have finished pics soon!

Finish is done!

I found a nice piece of crotch wood in the Spanish Cedar pile and used it for the top insert. Had to oil it just to show the grain in this thing!

It came out well for my first Humidor. You can hear the air pushing out of the box as you put the lid on.

It was a big hit! I filled it up with a few company T shirts we just had made and a handful of new fishing lures. He said he might just have to get a few cigars now and keep it for company in the game room.

Happy fathers day to all you dad's.

Very nice. Can't wait for my skills to get to a point where I can just "whip up" a quick box.
