Default Cherry Candle Stand

The table's not that great. But there's something rewarding about taking it from a log... to a piece of furniture.

Default Candle stand

CF,
Very nice, and yes a person gets great satisfaction when they build a project that started from a log they harvested and end up with a finished piece of furniture. Again, great job

Clarion,
Not a bad looking table at all. It should just get prettier with age. Now, where's the candle?

Default great table.....

I love the look of this table. Did you get it from a plan or come up with it yourself? Are the legs tapered on all sides or just the inside faces? Again, awesome looking table.

jraks

P.S. Cherry is my wood of choice. I cant seem to keep enough in the shop. Once you've used its hard to go back to anything else!

Default I like it

I am also a big fan of cherry. I enjoy how easy it works (with sharp tools). I also like that you included both heartwood and sapwood. I think many folks get too wrapped around only using the heartwood and lose a lot of the character (and material) when they try to cut out the sapwood. I like to incorporate sapwood whenever I use cherry. Sometimes it takes a bit of planning to use it right, though.

Anyway, nice job!

Thanks guys.
I really like the sapwood, too. The top even has a few worm holes.
The legs are tapered on all sides, and were a little tricky with the tapers and angles. I meant to only taper the insides, but I confused the legs with another table I was working on. Yeesch. I put this table aside for a bit, and finally got back to it after some gentle nudging.
And... wifey liked the antique version at an expensive antique store. I just happen to have a tape and cell phone camera in my pocket. Ya, it was cheesy of me, but I wanted a cherry version anyway. (The antique only has tapers on the insides).

Clarion I think your candle stand looks fabulous. I'm not sure where you are getting your sentiment of it not being that great, but I guess that comes from the privilege of being the craftsman that built the project. From the photo you posted, here is what I notice when I look at it:
The joints look nice and tight.
The wood looks clean with no excess glue smeared everywhere.
You have tapered legs – intended or otherwise.
You put nice subtle curves under the apron sides.
The joining of your boards has a mix of some beautiful Cherry grain – I too don’t mind the mixing of heart and sap woods on certain projects.
And one of the most important parts of any project – it has great proportion, it isn’t too spindly or to bulky.

Clarion you have built a very nice piece of furniture and you should be proud of it. Keep up the good work.
