Default From back in the day-first boat

I just came across these pics on my hard drive. An old girlfriend is sitting in the boat on its first voyage at a near by lake. Its a tiny little boat. 7' 9" Made with 1/4 inch ply and fiberglass. Nothing pretty but let me tell you that when you build one and then take it for a sail.......There is nothing quite like that feeling.

I miss that feeling. And as soon as I'm living in a place that will let me build another (real boat) I am going to. I have plans for two all ready. Both are 16 footers. A sailboat and a mini power boat.

The other pics are from some late night fishing outings I had with her.

That boat was so small that I actualy kept it in my pickup truck above my contractor tools. My truck had a contractor cap on it. I built a shelf for her to sit on. Boat was only 60 pounds. I used to carry a 35 pound trolling motor and a deep cycle battery with me and charge up at work. Good times.

Same summer I built that boat I got into a car wreck and the impact flexed the boat and the fiber glass seams cracked open.

It might not have flexed if the joints were dovetail splines
All kidding aside, that's a cool looking boat. I've never attempted making something like that but, who knows, maybe someday.

Very similar to one my father and I built in the 50s. WE were a bit broke and wood was very expensive, so used a marine grade hardboard (Masonite). Very simple construction. Cut the floor from one piece and secured it to two shaped wooden stringers to form the base. The sides were sinply screwed to the stringers and reinforced with gusset plates made from off cuts. Put in centre plate and 1/4 decked it with mast fitting. Sailed reasonably well round the Thames Estuary and up the River Roding. Had an old Johnson 38 motor as well.

Those were the days.

btyirin That's a nice looking boat. And the boat ornament isn't to bad either. LOL When I was a kid we made a few peroux's. They were pretty easy though. The boat's were 2ft wide, 1ft high, and 8ft long. Looked like the bottem half of a coffen. And we made them out 1/2 plywood. They made a couple of years and then we would another one. But they no were compaired to what you made, ans we neve got a boat ornament like your to ride in one either.

Brian, I have always wanted to build a boat and from reading accounts of others who have done so, this is the one recurring theme that always comes up! Nice job on it and hopefully you'll get to start another one soon!
