Default Another Strange commission

When you do custom woodworking you sometimes get asked to do some pretty strange things, which makes it kinda exciting. I was asked by a client if I did any carving. He explained that he had put up a mirror over his bar and was afraid that it was a little top heavy and probably needed extra support but wanted something artistic to accent the figure that was present on the frame. What he wanted was a set of carved hands that would attach to the wall and overlap the frame. This is what I came up with.
I used the size of my own hands as a template and used royal paulownia as the wood as it is lightweight but strong and cuts and carves easily.

These are the hands in place but not stained.

This is the finished product.

Stuff like this makes it all worth while

Now that does take an imagination to think of the hands holding the mirror.

Looks cool, and very creative, but a bit ominous...I think it's the fingernails.

That is a very cool addition to that mirror. You did an excellent job. I agree that it is quite ominous. Is the rest of the house similar or is it just this one piece? Kind of makes you think of the Adam's Family or something. Perfect for this time of year.

That's just awesome. I love the colour match that was done. It looks like it is part of the mirror instead of something that was added later. Great job. Carving is still on my to do list.

Nice job Mike.
Until I saw the completed photo I though you had some pretty weird fingers. I don't know if I would want to sit there drinking with that thing watching me.

Mike if you patterned those after your own hands you may want to trim up your nails just a bit. Seriously though that is some great work and looks awesome, albeit a little creepy! Nice work.
